Yeah I think this it the big lesson of Mary-Ann's ascension. Lots of people around her who disagreed with her hateful transphobic views were prepared to offer her a free pass because she kept those views quiet and polite. Cis folk need to stop giving people like this any benefit of the doubt.

much as the murder of Brianna Ghey mysteriously stopped being about the climate of transphobia in the UK and became about teen access to social media, the death of Jason Arday is, equally mysteriously, no longer about racism and is becoming about free speech in academia
This is obviously 100% correct, but also it shows how the specific target of racism shifts over time - people on small boats, asylum-seekers generally, E.European workers, care workers, Albanians, Muslims - but it’s always, always a proxy for objections to any migration or racial diversity at all
