I remember when I was in a hard stretch. I lined up a job interview. I didn't have any appropriate clothes. I went thrifting, digging for hours to find a decent shirt, pants, and tie. I shaved pilling from the shirt, spot cleaned, washed and ironed the outfit. In 2026 I guess it's pjs and a Slurpee.

This is why millenarian/doomsday cultists - which is what the rationalist AI doomers are in many respects - can be a lot more dangerous than others who believe kooky stuff. Nothing creates immediacy and desperation in the human mind like “the end is nigh, and I have to do something about it.”

there are posts claiming KFC or McDonalds is people meat, that's because Americans are so uneducated they are reverting to a pre-literate peasant mindset. If they did not personally see it, it is not real they cannot believe words about battery farms because they didn't see it with their eyes

ALL of these people are idiots. We have to normalize saying it. Being good at the one trick that made them rich is not being smart, insightful, or knowledgeable - even in the industry where they made it. Unless the question is "how does a pea brain nut job get rich?," their opinion is worthless.

So the message of this research out of China, where you were seeing a lot of kids using A.I. to help them, was that when they were using the A.I., they were getting things done faster. But it turned out that the skills they were learning were not holding, that their actual personal performance, at least in the way we traditionally measure it, was degrading. What do you think when you hear that? The last part — I completely agree. Try to get a kid to do long division right now. The multiplication table is starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots, my goodness. Basic math is being forgotten. Does it matter? That’s my question for you. Yeah. I don’t think it does. I don’t think it does. But there must be some set of skills that matter. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. But maybe not those. We’re going to discover new ones. Just maybe not those. There are a lot of skills that don’t matter. My first confession, I actually don’t know my address.
