People don't really realize how wild west the emergency care was in the beginning. You had ER docs on twitter literally talking about they were trying to figure out supportive care on the fly. When should we intubate, when should we use corticosteroids, etc.

Yeah, one of the dangers of how good medicine has gotten is it obfuscates the reality that there are certain stressors on the system that cause massive problems and we can't just wave a magic wand to fix them.

I think most people wildly underestimate how fine-tuned modern medicine is, as a result of experience and research, and "here's a new virus that can kill within days that we have neither experience with nor research on" is a pretty big curveball to hit.

Then again, the original books were a highly fictionalized account of what was in many ways a bleak existence. They were essentially rewritten by a foundational figure of the Libertarian Party, Rose Wilder Lane. So maybe the TV program is truer. www.history.com/articles/lit...

Once againc all of this is wildly illegal under the WTO & multiple other signed, ratified preferential trade agreements. A lot of this is also rooted in the fact that left wing men would rather try to win back white working class men than build a coalition with white women with college degrees (who are decidedly economically progressive) and Black voters (older ones are conservative. Younger ones are more left-wing)
