Fascinating that experts in extremism (which Marc is, btw) now see X as their core platform for research. (For over a decade, you had to delve into small telegram groups and other networks to track what extremists were saying.)

Dr. Marc-André Argentino@maargentino.com · 2y ago

X is now one of the core platform for research, with regards to terrorism and violent extremism. X faciliates TVE content and activity, in as much as Telegram. I honestly feel less trepidation logging into Gab or Truthsocial or the chans for research than than I do X, due to how vile the content is.

Just as a refresher since I haven’t been active here: I’m Osariik and I’m into rocks/geology, volcanoes, rock music, metal/metalcore, playing cricket, video games and pretty much anything else cool that I see.

I forgot this place exists, I’ll be honest.

bear in mind that this is a city who spends $249M of a $730M budget on police who, at least as of last year, were setting all-time lows for arrests and citations.

Portland, a city of 635k under the ever-looming threat of a massive earthquake, has just 1 city employee solely dedicated to earthquake preparedness. But after the city’s annual budget planning process, that number may drop to zero.

🧪 ⚒️ RÚV now has an English newsfeed for the new eruption north of Grindavík.

Hildur Knútsdóttir@hildur.bsky.social · 3y ago

So, in my just woken up state I got the timing of the eruption wrong in a previous post. Here is a newsfeed in English, from the national news agency, which is altogether a more reliable source than I am: www.ruv.is/english/2024...

They caught the beginning of the eruption on camera: www.ruv.is/frettir/innl...

Watching the live webcam feed www.youtube.com/live/kXD4A9u... of the current Icelandic eruption. Unfortunately, it appears that this eruption will have much more of an impact on the local population than the previous one, with the lava crossing the protective berm that was built earlier. 🧪⚒️

⚒️🧪 Earthquake activity north of Grindavík has picked up again in the last hour. Scientists at the Icelandic Meteorological Office say this could be a sign of another imminent eruption. www.ruv.is/frettir/innl...

If a strategy game has volcanoes in it, I'm about 470% more likely to purchase that game; closer to 4090% more likely if the volcanoes actually impact the game.

the history of Iceland in a nutshell

My favourite Unicode character is the Cyrillic character ꙮ, the multiocular O, which is literally only used in one phrase in one manuscript in the Old Church Slavonic language from the 15th century: "серафими многоꙮчитїй", which means "many-eyed seraphim".

Read this as: DON'T rush to Iceland to see this, even if you're a scientist. The starts of eruptive crises are chaotic & those in charge of protecting people don't need tourists taking resources from locals. People's homes and livelihoods are under threat, so have some humanity & watch a livestream.

🧪 ⚒️ A M5.8 earthquake occurred a few hours ago southeast of Mexico City. Not much damage, but interesting tectonics: the subducting slab is flat to the SW and bends down steeply to the NE. That bending seems to be capable of causing large, sometimes damaging earthquakes. Read more on our blog!

GUESS WHAT NERDS, I’VE FINALLY FINISHED MY DEGREE I’M OFFICIALLY A GEOLOGIST NOW (I think) ONTO A STRESS FREE SUMMER AND THEN MASTERS

This is probably my all-time favourite album art. I love the album itself too and the band is one of my favourites, they mean everything to me, but I just absolutely LOVE the album cover. It's just so pretty and well-designed. I'm somewhat planning on getting part of it as a tattoo at some point.

Drowned spruce stumps at Sunset Bay State Park, Oregon. Killed following an earthquake ~1000 years ago that caused this area to subside. Salt water and submersion are not good for most trees. Mangroves deal with, but I don't know of others. ⚒️

Some motivation to try to get me using this place a bit more I think: for every like that this post gets, I'll reply to this tweet with either a cool volcano fact or a cool volcano picture (or both). For every repost, I'll reply with two.

My @ handle is @Osariik on basically every platform I use EXCEPT Instagram, on which it is @osariik_ because someone else had already taken @Osariik and then apparently proceeded to never use it.

Very true.

Reminder to those watching the situation in Iceland that no eruption has begun yet.

From Iceland Met Office: “Estimate of the vertical displacements caused by the dike during its initial propagation from 10-11 November. The imagery shows over 1-m of ground displacement in the western part of Grindavík, caused by the propagation of the magma intrusion”. en.vedur.is/about-imo/news…
