The simple "Set an alarm for [time]" experience on my Pixel (via Gemini) has gotten unreliable enough that I'm back to manually setting it. It's gotten worse since I posted this.
Renee (paix120)@paix120.bsky.social · 3mo agoJust yesterday, Gemini on my phone responded to the ask of "Set an alarm for Wednesday at 8am" by setting an alarm for December 26. I asked why it did that, and it caught the error and fixed it.

This is certainly a less concrete thing than food, but sci-fi as a genre is so much better now than when I was growing up, 30+ (ugh) years ago. There are so many more queer and BIPOC authors, authors with disabilities, neurodivergent authors, and more!

everyone i've seen quote this has mentioned at least 1 thing that's gotten better over the past 40 years. i'm starting to think that things are actually generally better than they were 40 years ago. i'll add to it: global infant mortality rates have dropped by over half since the 90's.

Air quality. I grew up in the Los Angeles basin in the 70s and 80s and remember having to stay inside because the smog was so bad - Stage 2 smog alerts, they were called. Apparently they haven't had one of those since 1988. Haven't had a stage one smog alert since 2003.

Since we’re in another idiotic COVID spin cycle, some data: only about a quarter of people at the time thought schools were being too aggressive in trying to stop the plague. The people screaming about it in the media were very much not representative.

Almost 2:1 majorities were either mostly happy with how their schools handled it, or thought they were too lax. 67-27. Most people are looking at other Congressional districts in Virginia to flip, since the redistricting was overturned. But those of us in the districts that are usually deep red have plans, too!

So you know how I'm always harping on about N95s and HEPA filters? This is why. Even a mild COVID infection isn't "just" a COVID infection. It basically fucks up your immune system and tricks your body into attacking itself.
