In a free country, failing to comply with law enforcement does not give the state license to murder you
Homan on people getting killed by ICE: "It comes down to one simple fact -- these people failed to comply with law enforcement ... all they had to do is comply. If they did, they'd be alive today."

I'm once again begging everyone to update their priors. "ChatGPT is not a search engine." Yes, yes it is. It actively searches the web based on your prompt, and returns active links relevant to your search/prompt. It's a search engine. It is. (Obvs don't use it that way if that's not your thing)
(Joke aside, I am actually unreasonably excited. I want there to be more professional dialogue between social scientists in academia and those in the private sector. It may not be an article on anything I've done since I've graduated, but I'm glad to contribute to that dialogue in some small way.)
Me: "Sometimes, I miss being in academia." Monkey paw: *curls finger* My email: "We invite you to review..."

Daughter seeing me putting up paintings: "Can I help measure?" Me: "I'm already done measuring but you can help me with a bit of the math to make things balanced." Daughter: "Hm, no. I just want to measure, not do math." Ghost of Kolmogorov: "Good luck with that."
We've all heard of Wordle. But how about Poople? You get a start word and your goal is to try and make it, one letter at a time, to POOP. I was introduced by some friends. And in typical Peter fashion, I wondered if I could make a solver. www.peterlicari.com/posts/solvin...

Identification strategies based on spatially allocated resources / outcomes usually aren't actually isolating random or chance patterns. Very little is actually random when it comes to the spatial distribution of goods / services / people / outcomes.
I've been thinking about why I'm so bearish about using gen AI in my work. But it clicked for me one night as I was cooking: I cook and code for many of th same reasons. So I wrote an essay about why I cook. And why I do other things too. #databs www.peterlicari.com/posts/cookin...

This week's cooking experiment: Fried donuts! Gotta monitor the oil's heat a bit better next time, but a pretty tasty first crack at it.
I am obsessed with this finalist in this year's Michigan “I voted” sticker design contest
What a tremendous loss. I didn't get the privilege of meeting him personally, but he was one of the folks who made me (and many others) feel welcome as a part of the broader online poli sci community. He was so kind and generous. An inspiration and source of Light, gone too soon. Rest well.
I am so devastated to learn of the passing of @raulpachecovega.bsky.social, who I just had coffee with a week ago. We met at @repalconference.bsky.social and he was one of the kindest, most genuine people I have ever met in academia. He made me feel like my work mattered.
Just deeply shocked and saddened to hear about Raúl’s passing. He was an exceptionally generous community builder in the scholarly world. He will be sorely missed.

If you think UFOs are demons, you are not a serious, intelligent Christian with a mature faith. And yes, that includes JD Vance. www.nytimes.com/2026/05/31/u...

Greg Bovino will speak at a white nationalist conference in Portugal tomorrow. He will share the stage with no fewer than five people who idolize Hitler, including one who joined a group created by two Nazi SS members. Another guy is a self-described racist who refers to women as "cockroaches."🧵
I've done this with a couple of the folks in my daughter's GirlScouts troop: "Oh, you like this series---I'll lend you the next issue!" "Oh your kid was recently diagnosed with ADHD: take this book I used after I was diagnosed." Physical books foster connection in a way digital can't.
It's easy to caricature "Read Physical Books" as an effete nostalgic aesthetic, and an office shelf full of books does reproduce a particular aesthetic, but it also has pedagogical value. I love being able to pull a book off my shelf and say, "Have you read this one? Here, you can borrow it."
For 12 years, my writing bios concluded with "has oddly productive one-sided conversations with his cat, Asia." Those conversations spanned anime, debugging, dissertating, parenthood, hopes, and joys... Today we said goodbye to my beloved interlocutor. I choose to believe I will see her again.
The best way to memorialize those who have fallen in war, in my opinion, is to strive for a world where war no longer exists to claim lives in the first place.

This spring, I helped coach my daughter's U7 soccer team. Today was our last game and, in addition to some sweet cards, one of the kiddos gave me this. Got me tearing up, ngl.
The list of those before whom I quake is quite small and it sure as fuck doesn't include fascists.
I believe we are all beloved children of God. ALL. No exceptions. Trans folks all deserve the same chance at flourishing and peace as the rest of us. We all deserve life free of fear. If that makes me a radical, then I'm a radical. Arrest me mother fuckers.
