One of the great joys of my adult life has been realizing that I can just pick up a new skill every so often, take a fun little class in it weekly for a year or two, and simply enjoy meeting people and getting medium proficient and not attempting to become professional in it at all!

It is not correct, that mathematicians have not weighed in. Here's for example an interview with Francesco Fournier-Facio (Cambridge) on the non-sofic groups. share.google/skdtcxZutEYd...

No independent mathematicians have weighed in on these claim yet. #mathematics #math #ArtificialIntelligence #AI Source:https://buff.ly/q5RxYc8
From quantum physics to robotics, Lie groups are invaluable to science and engineering. Now, a new collaboration led by Yale University's Yair Minsky is merging representation theory, geometry & randomness to reveal new insights into the mathematical structures: https://bit.ly/4z1zz1K #math #physics
New Simons Collaboration Will Explore Discrete Subgroups of Lie Groups
Mathematician Yair Minsky will direct a Simons Foundation collaboration studying the mathematical structures, which are invaluable to modern physics.

Leute. Dafür bräuchtet ihr die Erlaubnis der Lehrperson. Ohne dürft ihr NICHTS aufnehmen.

this is pretty wild, #iTeachMath + #MathSky ♾️ i include below a screenshot of the Abstract the first result concerns work by Henry Cohn, who finished his 3 weeks of lecturing at PROMYS (Boston Univ.) yesterday. some good reading material for his flight back to PROMYS UK! openai.com/index/ten-ad...
Open AI has published some new mathematical results, solving some important conjectures: cdn.openai.com/pdf/ten-proo...
So yeah, this remains true in the age of AI as it has always been: as Euclid (probably apocryphally) said to King Ptolemy I, “there is no royal road to geometry”. You can't just buy your way into being a mathematician with a 200$/month “pro” subscription: you need work … •15/16
The role of a conjecture in math is not just a question seeking for an answer. It's a bit like a moon shining light onto a piece of nature and wildlife to be explored.
If you don't understand why solving problems can destroy the opportunity for gaining knowledge, read this thread. 🔽 These problems (as all others in math) were only of interest insofar as they were a proximate goal designed for human understanding: now this can no longer come.
OpenAI: "yes, nonsofic groups exist: this statement is one of many new beautiful results proved by Astra, our next major model We're releasing 10 such Astra proofs...results are wide-ranging, from von Neumann algebras to better bounds for high dimensional sphere packing" openai.com/index/ten-ad...
This is probably evident from my work - but I like to struggle and I think it’s the most important thing. It teaches us everything. We struggle, we make discoveries, and we surprise ourselves along the way…

How to read Mathematics? A study guide
Reading a math textbook isn't like reading a novel. You've probably already figured that out on your own. But how *do* you read mathematical texts? And how can you actually learn from a book or lectur...

While the Fields Medal celebrates the under-40s, the mathematician Joan Birman has, at the age of 99, solved a major open problem in representations of the Braid groups, a topic she has worked on for more than 60 years.
This is exciting news! Many years ago I also briefly looked at this problem.
“The Burau representation of the braid group is faithful for n = 4” Vasudha Bharathram, Joan S. Birman, Tara E. Brendle arxiv.org/abs/2607.05283 I learned this from: www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-... See also: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braid_g... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burau_r...

Like a breath of fresh air. Hugo Duminil-Copin stance on AI in math.
“Nature has learnt that the NSF has now pulled back $300 million from two of its divisions: mathematics and physical sciences, and computer and information science and engineering.” It seems the money is being used to fund AI ‘grand challenges’. If you’re sure AI can ‘solve maths’ this is sensible.
Oh yeah, and if Kratsios gets his way the US government won't fund life science research or universities anyway. Nature story: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Kannst du dir nicht ausdenken... Wenn das so weitergeht sind all die Schreibenden beim Postillon bald arbeitslos.
