Finally got my hands on Tirailleurs to consider for my WWI/Film course this fall. Didn't love the film, but thought it raised some interesting historical questions to debate/discuss. Curious whether anyone else has taught it to undergrads. How did they react? What reading(s) did you pair it with?

Our union president compiled a chart of salaries for different career stages (first year TT, promotion to Associate, promotion to Full, end of career) at my university (Western Oregon University). Adjusted for inflation, faculty are making between 5,000 to 25,000 less now than we were in 2009

I passed my dissertation defense! Not sure if I’m Dr. Heydari yet, or if that has to wait until I get the piece of paper in the mail in December. Some minor revisions to take place in August. Thank you all for your support and friendship along the way. I can believe this is real.

Working on my Great Pigeon Massacre book. In trying to describe French farming practices and how pigeons became such a politicized subject, I find myself pushing back against the narrative that French farmers were somehow behind English ones. /1

I am coming back to @richardckeller.bsky.social's essential book, "Fatal Isolation: The Devastating Paris Heat Wave of 2003," to help put the unfolding climate catastrophe in Paris, and Europe more broadly, in historical context. I recommend others do the same.
Im so exhausted by this pattern. Historians spend years in the archives to write detailed accounts of the past. Only for journalists, doctors, podcasters, and now cartoonists, to swoop in and get paid a lot of money to trot out the same work, "uncovering hidden histories" that are not at all hidden.
