Philosopher. Working on philosophical exercises, philosophy as a way of life, and political disagreements. Enthusiastic about: #phenomenology, #mindfulness, #hermeneutics and the medical humanities. https://philosophicalexercises.blogspot.com/

I'm putting together slides for a talk on [philosophical] research conceptualization, craft, and design I'm giving next week. This basically consists of digging through old blog posts to find material I can cut and paste. I'm being reminded of some really good posts. Here's a thread of them.

Come for Emily taking about the epistemology of history, stay for the noise Brennan Lee Mulligan makes when he finds out she wrote a whole book about smells.

I am unbelievably touched that @dropout.tv titled my @dimension20.dropout.tv Adventuring Academy episode “A Duty of Care”

I’m overwhelmed today, but I want to circle back in a while to share the links to everyone & everything I cited. More soon.

The French government released a PSA about eco-anxiety. They start by granting that anxiety is a normal response to the crisis. Then, they claim it becomes pathological when it is "overwhelming", "creates suffering", "disrupts daily life" with "unpleasant emotions (fear, anger, despair)" #philsky

a poster for a French psa about eco-anxiety. I am not sure what the image depicts: a naked woman in a plastic bag, looking overwhelmed? Some of the writing on the poster includes "let's talk mental health!", "how to deal with eco-anxiety", and "understanding this suffering and spotting the early signs".

The success of Emily Wilson's translation had nothing to do with Christopher Nolan. The hardcover edition came out 9 years ago and was a huge success. The paperback has been in steady demand since 2018. My store has sold 75 copies (a lot for 1 book for us) and 66 of those were before January.

“A Penn professor thought she’d sell 1000 copies of her ‘Odyssey’ translation. She sold a million this year alone, thanks to Christopher Nolan.” “West Philly's Emily Wilson, who penned a highly acclaimed translation of the epic poem in 2017, is having a big summer.”

Hello everyone! Making the move to Bluesky - I'm an early modernist with many interests, clustering around the intersection of literature, intellectual history, rhetoric and religion from 1500 to 1800. I have a few things to update everyone on.

A lovely post about the Focusing process "invented" by Eugene Gendlin. What happens inside u when u go "uh ..." & search for just the right word, the 1 that truly resonates? I've been a Focusing practitioner for 16 years & it's an important part of my life. rivalvoices.substack.com/p/what-even-...

What even is Focusing and why Eugene Gendlin is the greatest man to ever grace the Earth with his existence

When Pierre & Ilsetraut Hadot, echoing Thoreau, declared that professors of philosophy replaced true philosophers, I think they were engaging in what Eric Schliesser calls "philosophic prophecy". This concept helped me to make peace with controversial aspects of their work 🧵⬇️ #philsky #philtwit
