i do get the handwringing about how academia relates to the public, but fundamentally, any proposal that involves academics not saying what they earnestly believe, even and especially when it is at variance from public opinion is a nonstarter for me

Not many people know this, but in America, the Edinburgh Fringe is called the Edinburgh Bangs.
It gets an actual chuckle out of me seeing people on here say "now the TRUE test is whether the shitlibs can live up to their own words and line up behind El-Sayed!" only for Stevens, Whitmer, every prominent Michigan Dem, the DSCC, etc. to have endorsed El-Sayed before they can finish the sentence.
Trump is now demanding political show trials not only against opponents, but against random people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Let's not lose sight of how abnormal this is. Trump is demanding prosecutions over Reflecting Pool fiasco even though his own DOJ has shown conclusively it isn't supported by facts or law. On the pod, @barbmcquade.bsky.social is brilliant on the bigger stakes here: newrepublic.com/article/2139...
philosophy the one intellectual endeavor Sufficiently Advanced LLMs cannot replace, because philosophy is only fully sensible in the context of the Individual Life 😎
The obvious upshot of recent improvements in LLMs is that things we always knew were easy (theoretical physics, Fields-level mathematics, engineering and computer programming) are, in fact, easy, while the things we knew were hard (writing 8000 words on one sentence from David Lewis) remain hard
I reckon my large human brain could handle 150
Update: group chats can now host up to 100 members.
Sincerely love this take because it hammers home how every single one of us inhabits a world completely our own
You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Good morning Bluesky ☀️ My grandad told me he saw the Titanic - from the outset he warned all the people that the ship would sink, but nobody listened to him. He knew he was right and didn't give up. He warned them again & again, until eventually they kicked him out of the cinema.
I am going to be spending the rest of my day and possibly my week thinking about "Werner the Herzog" and quite frankly it's the last thing I needed
Juro que tem dias que eu acordo pensando nisso aqui:
Someone who thinks nothing has got better in the last forty years is probably just depressed
Apparently SpaceX owns Twitter nowadays. I knew it owned xAI but didn't know xAI owns Twitter. xAI is also called SpaceXAI now as well
Excited to see what we do with all the orbital data centres once we decide that using AI for everything kind of sucks after all; streaming is going to be so hi-res and our G drive allowances are going to be off the charts
If I was in the Parfit mineshaft situation I would simply ring up one of the miners on their mobile and ask them which shaft they're in; how is it that Parfit could predict teletransporters but couldn't predict mobiles
Here’s a very nerdy point but if you buy the reasoning that putatively gets you to ‘it’s likely we’re living in a simulation’, the same reasoning completely swamps that likelihood with Boltzmann brains is it’s actually ~0% we’re in a simulation by your lights
Don't ask why I'm this deep into my camera roll (I am extremely jet lagged) but it's given me an opportunity to repost this now nearly decade-old classic.
anytime i leave new york or dc i am astonished by the degree to which no one anywhere else seems to be in a hurry

How can Bluesky be a liberal bubble when loads of people on here use the word 'liberal' as an insult
cop: did he send any texts around the time of the crash? cop 2: he sent a post that reads "padding my three track album with 26 skits and interludes" cop: not bad but it ain't going viral cop 2: posting isn't just about going viral cop: (sighs) not this shit again
Yes I acknowledge it makes sense in context but “I need my car to meet criminals” is now my favourite basis for an attempted exceptional hardship plea. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
