A nuance to the whole “Capitalism has made ma jeans too expensive” discourse is that, if your clothes, boots etc are made in countries with good labour laws, that’s a big part of the cost. So your Red Wing boots are made by unionised workers and that’s partly why they cost £350. It’s a good thing.

Finding this Dr Martens discourse quite funny. I got my first pair of Docs in 1976, they were cheap and robust, which is why punks and skinheads wore them. They’ve never been ‘high quality,’ they were affordable workwear which came with instructions on how to fix the sole with a ‘hot knife’.

You can still buy the high quality made in England Dr Martens. People prefer the Chinese version because it’s $100 cheaper.

Cobblers.Trump is as American as it gets. He is the pustule at the top of the systemic infection that’s been rotting away under the surface for pretty much ever. And Europeans have no trouble understanding that.

Tl;dr: Americans have trouble understanding there is ~nothing unique about Trump. He is part of the broad wave of far right parties/politicians since 2008 across rich democracies. Our institutions just suck more. Europeans have trouble understanding there is ~nothing unique about Trump. See above.

At my age you are expected to say that everything good is disappearing and everything bad is getting worse. But it’s so dispiriting to look around the world and to see leaders apparently on a crusade to make this true.
