#nzpol Since the last election, the youth unemployment rate has climbed from 10.8% to 16.6%. Luxon's Government has responded by blaming young people, means-testing their benefits, and ripping fees fee away from uni students. It's great to see parties like the Greens backing our young workers:

Greens' youth jobs guarantee is the action young workers need NZCTU

The New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi welcomes the Green Party's Youth Jobs Guarantee, which would give every 16- to 24-year-old who has been out of work for six months a pathway in...

In Te Tairāwhiti Gisborne and it was jobs jobs jobs that kept coming up. Our beautiful, equitable future ahead can *not only* centre our young people - but secure decent, meaningful jobs that build a country where care for each other and te taiao is simply how we work - for all of us 🌏✊️

#nzpol To anybody who may want to hear: The easiest way to get someone "off the JS benefit and into work" is to offer ... a good job with a liveable wage in a safe environment where they are valued and can aspire to a life of contribution and service. Is not rocket science. End of. 🙏.

Sorry, I'll explain. We currently react to inflation by reducing the disposable income of spenders so that demand falls and unemployment goes up. We use a bufferstock of unemployed people to keep workers desperate, so wages are suppressed and we don't get a feedback loop (wage 🔄 prices) [🧵 1/n]

Simply the best socio-economic policy anyone can vote for this election. If I was splitting hairs, I would say that the six months wait is about six months too long, but it's still a great start.

Oh dear, this is awful. A heady mix of ill-informed and untrue. Let's have a quick run through the lowlights... First, when we do get some articles about the rest of the balance sheet, Brucey? Govt's *positive* net financial worth? Business debt? Household debt? No? Why? [🧵1/n]

#nzpol There are so many unasked questions about our current economic 'policy' one of which - how come employment growth in 2024 and 2025 was worse than the GFC? There wasn't a worldwide slowdown in those years - the growth in unemployment here is entirely self-inflicted.

When you hear Luxon crowing about Treasury forecasts of adding 221,000 jobs over the next four years, know that (a) it's a pathetic level of ambition, and (b) it's highly unlikely to happen without significant changes in policy.

Counterpoint: All potential NZ government parties can in fact afford whatever they want to prioritise. They have massive capacity for investment and the financial position of the country, despite what the current Government likes to cry, is totally fine. Spend money to make NZ better!

The NZIER report referenced here is worth a read. Sets out clearly how young people are being screwed all ways by Govt economic and social policy. The economy is being throttled, migration settings have loosened, and the Govt are victim blaming. Let young people earn a living ffs. Simple as that

I mean, it is not actually funny, but good grief. When you hear Lux-out talking about the 220,000 jobs on the way, getting the economy back on track, and the return to slurplus (whatever), remember that the numbers rest on assumptions that are frankly bollox.

Riddle me this: how come when Nat government *must* increase defence spending by $5 Billion Nats say they just have to borrow it but when similar Billions are required for Pay Equity for women they pretend this isn’t possible? #NZPol

Greens announce passenger rail: Auckland–Wellington, Christchurch–Dunedin, Te Huia to Tauranga. Luxon: rail must be "commercially viable." Motorways aren't commercially viable. We fund them anyway. "Viability" is the test Luxon applies to things he doesn't want built. #nzpol
