It's the Democrats' curse that they will save a bunch of idiots' lives and will then be called liars by those same idiots because they didn't die so the threat wasn't real.

i mean, this is what trump demands of people; he demands that they demean and humiliate themselves as publicly as possible in his defense. what i don't understand and will never understand is why so many people with other choices agree to it.

You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?

I'd extend my argument to say what we face is not a crisis of facts, but a crisis of consequences. If the public loses faith in the ability for facts to result in consequences, then populist and authoritarian movements that offer consequences operate as a counterfeit for functional democracy.
