It remains baffling to me that we have a clear constitutional requirement that the president can't enrich himself on the job, something we had no problem enforcing strictly for hundreds of years, and then this sweaty conman came by and the nation just sorta shrugged it off.

Brian Phillips@brianphillips.lol · 2mo agoI'm working on a column about the tech annoyances that drive us crazy, and I want it to be as universal as possible, so tell me yours! E.g. scanning a QR code to read a menu, never receiving the one-time passcode they supposedly texted you, "verify you're human" by IDing tiny motorcycles, etc.
This runs against the *very* strong tradition of resignation and public statement in exchange for not criticizing administration policy while an actual employee of the federal government.

Every couple months I check in on the latest Adrian Chiles articles and I’m always absolutely blown away. These are all from the last couple months. The man is operating at an incredibly high level.
Fifteen years ago, when I arrived at Columbia U, David Rosner already had the kind of research career and impact one can only hope for--and yet no one was more generous or kind. I was deeply honored to blurb his final book. I will miss him greatly. RIP David the great. May your memory be a blessing.

Receiving these kinds of emails never gets old. I provide public goods to fellow academics, students and society in general largely because I strive to create a better, more humane and human academic environment.This is from a few years ago. To this day, I keep getting these emails. Really happy.
As some of you know, I’ve been under tremendous stress over the past 5 and a half months. But what I’ve realized again is that I DO love writing. As I have said before, I live the challenge and the friction and the hard work that comes with writing, and more importe Roy, with writing well.

This thread feels totally like bait for those who want to rage-engage with it, but I’ll bite. BlueSky (and surprisingly, Threads) gives me A LOT MORE control over who gets to talk to me and whose energy I get to absorb (or deflect). I have more than 15 years of experience with social media.
Corey Atad@coreyatad.com · 2mo agoi think, end of the day, the real problem with Bluesky is that most of its users are here *because* they want to be in a bubble. and they can tell themselves that it’s just about not being around Nazis it supporting Musk, and that’s part of it, but also there’s a palpable desire to be ensconced.
