Frequently people on here say that it's because of billionaires, airbnb, private equity, corporations, and other villains that housing is so unaffordable in California. But often it's just because of mom dad grandma grandpa yelling at their city councils that there's too much housing being built

Let's check in on some community reactions to an affordable housing project in San Jose! "We are sick and tired of high density housing. Even worse that political forces are shoving it down our throats so they can maintain power. Build single family homes." I love the "maintain power" angle!

this is a real thing that happens a lot and it’s a total misunderstanding of capitalism and i really wish that more loud and online anti-capitalists would take the time to understand what it is they think they’re against, most of them are wrong about what they think they’re fighting

there is a strain of lefty discourse where you can’t come to any unflattering conclusions about the populace—those must be explained away by how they are being acted upon by capital—but I think you’ll understand things better if you understand capital can also exploit weaknesses it didn’t create

It’s not a slogan. It’s a cause. Abolishing slavery was a cause, and everything that’s written below about prison abolition was written about abolition of slavery. It’s good to have causes, if they are just.

"Abolish Prisons" is a slogan that will immediately turn off 95% of people, regardless of the nuances in the literature. Far more harmful than helpful. The right clearly always wanted to make abortion illegal and punish women who got them. But they didn't make that their slogan! They knew better!

One of America's big strengths is ability to pull in and assimilate new talent We should make immigration easy, strong border enforcement is stupid. But resisting immigration is especially stupid when it involves turning away people with proven skills.

I will never "embrace mistakes" to prove I'm not an AI. Human beings have been publishing clean copy that's a pleasure to read for centuries and I think that's a good tradition to maintain.

Authors and journalists are doing more first-person (hello 2010s blogging) and embracing "mistakes" in writing to prove they're not chatbots. There's even an “anti-Grammarly" app that leaves in typos and signs off "sent from my iPhone" to create more authenticity: www.wired.com/story/more-t...

If your principles about humane treatment don't extend to the very worst people, they're not principles. Just favors for friends. "Anything you do to a Bad Person is ethical because they are Bad" needs to stop being our moral default.

And to preempt the inevitable "why are you choosing the TATES of all ppl to make this argument for," it's because it is ESPECIALLY FOR these "easy" cases that we have to make these arguments. They are easy political cases that lead to inhumane treatment for all.

3. In repressive regimes, the task of dissent is to puncture the sense of inevitability. Modi’s been in power 12 years and very rarely so much as recognized an oppositional campaign. Now that he’s caved (bye, education minister), the entire possibilities landscape has changed and Modi knows it.
