"ai" discourse exploits our social patterns. we don't owe polite consideration to people who are rudely barging into every private space at once you don't need to grant the premise that it's good for something somewhere to say that it's bad here in front of you

I'm hoping it's #1, and also that as time goes on, more people will feel comfortable being out, open, and leadership providing LLM/"AI" haters. Like @aclanthology.org anthonymoser.github.io/writing/ai/h...

this is one hell of a way to put your thumb on the scale this was not a study comparing AI-generated reviews to human-reviews. this was a study comparing AI-generated reviews to AI-rewrites-of-human-reviews i'd even go so far as to say the authors of this piece are just plain lying

that are fluent but generic or poorly grounded in the manuscript (Fichtl et al., 2026). We test for the first by rewriting the human reviews in the AI’s style and for the second by checking each review’s claims against the manuscript, and we also had human editors judge a sample of pairs (Section 3). Before comparing the two reviews, we had the AI decide which review topics were relevant to each paper (e.g., so a paper with no figures was not judged on “figures and tables”). We locked in that list of applicable topics once per paper, based only on the paper. Then we had the AI judge evaluate both reviews on only that set of topics. The AI judge evaluated the reviews under three instruments — an overall ranking of the two reviews, made from the reviews alone; a head-to-head ranking of the two reviews in each of seven review areas; and an independent individual rating score from 0 to 10 for each of the areas, the last two made with the manuscript’s text in hand (Supplementary Appendix D). The overall ranking judged each review as a

"No matter how we look at the data, AI wins. It wins in 100% of the pairs overall when judged by another AI model...and 87% overall when judged by human journal editors... [H]umans agreed as much or more with AI’s judgment than they did with other humans" gking.harvard.edu/files/peerle...

Ramaswamy has produced an attack ad weaponizing the rape of his opponent, Amy Acton, when she was 12 years old. It features Acton’s mother, who abandoned Acton after she was raped by her step-father, fleeing the state with her husband. Here is the corporate money helping fund that ad.

It broke my heart a little to hear SciAm was being sold off and butchered. I unsubscribed in June, and I recommend you do the same. Learning some of the details of what happened is certainly clarifying, but depressing. Science in this country is being silenced. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

The Fall of “Scientific American”

When the beloved science publication got too political, its corporate owners stepped in. Now its future is uncertain.

i don't like thinking about things as inevitable, so on that i disagree with jessie however, you know, bush-clinton-w bush, w bush-obama-trump, and trump-biden-trump all kinda show a pattern. admittedly, in two instances that's 8 years of maintaining/expanding what repubs did rather than 4, so...

youtubers, streamers, podcasters, etc are always on this beat bc they don't know how anything works & know that if they say something like this, their audiences will lap it up now & also 3 years later when they point to total gay commie revolution not happening and go "see? i was right!"

Excellent piece about the “zombie” science of “race realism” - the claim that biological races exist. It reviews two books which should “finally nail down the coffin” of this claim, covering its history and a careful discussion of the responsibilities of scientists when researching related topics

BREAKING: The hepatitis B vaccine trial in Guinea-Bissau "will not move forward," the lead researcher says. “The solution is clear here: Take the money and vaccinate as many kids as you can,” @pauloffit.bsky.social told me: www.theguardian.com/world/2026/o...

I want to write something about how major twentieth century antisemites from Hitler and Goebbels to conspiracist grand dame Nesta Webster regarded the Protocols of the Elders of Zion in a similar way as techofacists understand Golden Age scifi--as prophetic fiction.

gonna be talking about anti-vaccine science denial later and, in prepping for it i'm struck by how common but how unwarranted the narrative that "vaccines are a victim of their own success" is prior to covid-19, i can see the appeal. in the covid era we're in, though, that narrative can't fly

i've recently heard that some ai bros want to make an smw central alternative because we don't allow gen ai content on the site. here's my direct response to those people. "who owns rom hacking?" and other questions ai poisons us with shoujo.gay/who-owns-rom...

Holy cow. The Guinea-Bissau offices of the two Danish researchers who were funded by RFK Jr. to conduct an unethical experiment with the HepB vaccine just had their offices raided and vaccines seized by the police. Great work on reporting this story once again by @melodyschreiber.com.

so, tantalizing as the coverage of the PRRI's survey notwithstanding, the actual results are a tad more nuanced because some of the questions are, in fact, poorly worded. including this empathy question it's basically a semantic differential answer format but the anchors are not really opposites

"A survey released Tuesday (Oct. 20) found that Republicans and evangelicals increasingly see empathy as a danger that can lead society away from God." religionnews.com/2026/10/20/a...

A chart showing how different religious groups responded to a question about empathy on a poll.

White evangelicals stand out, with 54% saying they believe empathy "can become dangerous when it leads people away from building a society guided by God's truth."

i think once a year i'm reminded of lists made by right-wingers of video games where the games are labeled as woke or not woke, and how they just reveal that right-wingers don't really know how to engage at all with video games as either a form of entertainment or of art

at some point i just need to write the paper "does the conservative have a theory of mind?" because every day is just more and more evidence that no, they do not. and the evidence continues to accumulate that the drift towards conservatism causally inhibits theory of mind development and expression

I really need people to understand that saying that insulting my oppressors and their co-conspirators ‘doesn’t help the cause’ Calling it ‘a different flavor of prejudice’ Telling me to nicely persuade people who are doing violence to me - You’re saying my dignity is contingent on your feelings.
