A few years ago I flew to Traverse City (MI) on the 4th of July, which was extraordinary (seeing fireworks from above) which reminded me of July 4th as a new mom on Capitol Hill in DC on Independence Ave, so I wrote a poem, & you can read it here! 🎆 www.shenandoahliterary.org/volume-75-nu...

Stumbled across this podcast episode today. I love Levine and this poem. Meitner’s close reading really adds to my appreciation of it. Also, shout out to the power of a great poetry anthology. The Poulin anthology she mentions, I found at a used bookstore in my hometown, struggling, post undergrad.
It is possible you maybe want to hear me talk about “What Work Is” by Philip Levine with Kevin Young over at the @newyorker.com poetry podcast? www.newyorker.com/podcast/poet...
"This isn’t the time to say nothing." Indie journalist @marisakabas.bsky.social beautifully and heart-breakingly reminds us how important it is right now to find solidarity in our neighbors, wherever they're from, and fight the power being rained down upon us. www.thehandbasket.co/p/crackdown-...

Normal thing for a major urban American newspaper to have to post.
Here's how to identify some crowd control munitions, canisters of which federal agents have left on the ground after deploying them against people in Minnesota. bit.ly/3YWp1jE Graphic by Mark Boswell/The Minnesota Star Tribune

i was talking with someone in the twin cities about how it’s not even accurate to call them protesters. they’re literally just people protecting their city from TERRORISTS.
Every time the Trump regime uses the words "funded protesters" and "outside agitators" news outlets need to cut to this photo from last week. ICE has invaded these communities. Outside agitators don't show up in their fucking bathrobes.
ICE has kidnapped so many people from their cars that the city had to put out this statement. Let that sink in.
Vehicles that are abandoned due to an ICE detention and towed to the City's impound lot will be released to their owners or a representative at no cost. Learn more: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/getting-around/parking-driving/impound-lot/#d.en.200746
On the ground here in Minnesota, it’s hard to reconcile the immense bonds of community that have been built in a week with the fact that we live in a country whose government appropriated billions of dollars to an unaccountable paramilitary force whose sole purpose is ethnic cleansing.
