Let's explore a specific moment in time: BEFORE radar was invented (~1939) but AFTER airplanes entered warfare (1911). The best way to detect an airplane sneaking up on your border or coastline is with one of these absolutely ridiculous-looking devices. This is a "two horn acoustic locator", 1921.

A two-horn listening device in use at Bolling Field in Washington, D.C., in 1921, used to detect distant aircraft before the advent of radar.

Bill Oddie, what a lovely bloke. He wrote us a letter when we started making The Young Ones, wishing us the very best, and warning us against interference from higher up. He didn’t know anyone in the cast personally. It just came out of the blue. Lovely thing to do.

✍️A TNT shortage, a world at war and why an obscure factory next to a Sheffield fast fashion warehouse could help explain how to reindustrialise Britain. It has been the privilege of my life to serve my country as Attorney General over the last two years. I’ve been so lucky to be a part of Keir’s team, as he delivered for the public at home while rebuilding the UK’s reputation abroad, in particular on the rule of law.

Pitiful. Just won a great victory at football. Immediate response: remind us of a failed war to annex a sovereign territory that your governments only go on about to distract from their manifold failings.

Deeply saddened to learn of the loss of my dear friend Satan, the Prince of Lies. Though we often disagreed about matters such as the appropriate role of torture in the afterlife, I will most remember how his quick wit and affable nature made our weekly golf outings a ritual. He will be missed.

Anthropic and OpenAI have legacy software media in the blender because they are playing a new game. They are legitimately racing to build God. The products they release are one-off fundraising vehicles to buoy the next training run. They are not trying to build long-term consumer goodwill.

EXC: Andy Burnham was briefed on the Defence Investment Plan before it was published. But I understand he was *not* told that he would have to find an extra £4.7bn to fund it in his first budget. This has come as a surprise today.

So how did we get here, with Starmer on the way out after two years? To some extent, it does go back to the beginning. It was not an enthusiastic victory for Labour. Getting rid of the Tories was the top reason people voted for them in 2024, though with their message of 'Change' also resonating.
