Just loving how John Cleese, now reduced to one of his own caricatures, rages about immigrants coming to the UK and failing to accept "our" culture, from his home in ... (checks notes) ... Nevis in the Caribbean.

As the owner of several AMC theater franchises, you can imagine I'm extremely left wing. But I bet you didn't realize I'm so left wing that I'm willing to bleed thousands of dollars every time I show the Odyssey to an empty IMAX theater to create the impression that a black actress is pretty.

I hate this headline. I hate it so much. Let me tell you why. It makes it sound like the AI was "cast" in a movie, except the movie is being made by the same people who made Tilly, it's all in house, I might as well announce that Dan Olson has been cast as the host of a Folding Ideas doc.

Saw some people wistful for this tradition, but there's no reason to feel low. These women are engaged in a process known as waulking, in which weavers soak freshly woven tweed in vats of stale urine. Then they beat the cloth until it softens and shrinks. The work songs help keep rhythm. 🧵

Not to be that guy but Netflix is not "re-creating" Gene Wilder's voice because Gene Wilder remains dead. It's using software to make a noise that viewers may think sounds like Gene Wilder (in a show that also sounds tone-deaf for unrelated reasons) www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/n...

The streamer had the permission of the late actor's estate to generate the voiceover.

Driving WB on O'Connor, just as you cross Victoria Park. There's a little dip in the road and it bends and suddenly for about 3-4 seconds the CN Tower is directly in front of you. It's so unexpected to see it in Scarborough and so brief. And makes me happy every time.

I asked readers what’s their favourite view of the tower. Mine is swimming out from Hanlans beach. What’s yours? Quote w your fav. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

What's your favourite view of the CN Tower? Mine is from Hanlan's Point beach on Toronto Island. From the sand the tower is hidden by trees — it's only revealed when swimming out. This view takes some effort to get to, too:
the farther out, the more is revealed.
Immersed in Lake Ontario, I see a symbol of Toronto's civilization while floating in what is essentially a wilderness. The juxtaposition of those two very different things, and their proximity, reminds me why I love this city.
Now, suddenly, it's 50. Half a century since it opened to the public. It's reached human middle age. The CN Tower dominated the skyline a little longer, though, considering so many people watched its rapid construction upwards, from concrete stump to space age pods.

RIP Bobby Prince. this 1993 clip of him explaining the Commander Keen menu music is amazing. worth a watch even if you don't give a rip about Keen. source link below.

Obviously braindead idea, but if it happens you can only hope that the prosthetics and contact lenses have evolved enough since 2000 that Carrey isn't miserable again.

213. The twentieth-century Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien, in the words of a protagonist in one of his novels, described our responsibility in this way: “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.” [187] The civilization of love will not arise from a single or spectacular gesture, but from the sum total of small and steadfast acts of fidelity that serve as a bulwark against dehumanization. For this reason, it is worthwhile pausing to reflect on some aspects of how we, each in our own way, can cooperate in building the civilization of love. Without presuming to exhaust this theme, I would like to propose five paths toward daily and public responsibility: the need to disarm words, building peace through justice, adopting the perspective of victims, cultivating a healthy realism and reviving dialogue and multilateralism.Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.

Starbucks done EFFED up in Korea. Bad. May 18th just passed, Democratic Movement Day, when rose up after the military dictatorship sent tanks to mass-murder citizens. Some inappropriately call it "Tank Day." Starbucks commemorated Tank Day with a sale on tank tumblers. It gets much worse...

A Starbucks add that says 5/18: Tank Day! Slam it on your desk! And features a selection of coffee tumblers.
