The U.S. uses prison labour (incl. for private firms) more than any other country, hasn't raised its min. wage ($7.25/hr) since 2009, and violates dozens of international labour standards every day. So Trump's new Section 301 tariffs have nothing to do with concern for labour. /2

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com · 9mo agoWhen I worked in WaPo Opinions in 2017-2018, senior editors specifically told junior editors not to factcheck Marc Thiessen and other MAGA columnists, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to publish anything by them at all, and “we need them for intellectual diversity.”
There's a lot of variation across #cdnecon in exposure to the new 50% U.S. tariffs (on August 19). Here's a preliminary estimate of the share of exports affected (based on HS6, so a slight over-estimate). BC/ON/QC most exposed. Others far less so.

Trudeau treated Alberta like so much garbage that he bought and finished a pipeline to tidewater for them, kept approving oil sands projects (that didn't get built because the world price of oil crashed), and he said repeatedly that it didn't make sense to leave those resources in the ground.
