RIP Don Iwerks, "an innovator whose work brought The Disney Company to new technological heights, aiding in perfecting the sodium vapor process used in Mary Poppins, developing the 360-degree Circle-Vision camera and implementing the projection system for the fan-favorite Star Tours attraction."

Don Iwerks, the Disney legend who spearheaded various camera and projection systems for the company’s parks and films, has died. He was 96.

It's actually *exactly* like this, because Vannevar Bush laid out the modern structure for US research funding after WWII to ensure general R&D capacity—to keep the economy humming, but also in case there was another war, because it had been so hard to get big defense-critical projects spun up.

It's like on the eve of WWII we decided to stop funding R&D into weapons systems to develop advanced aircraft, ships, and tanks. Climate change is going to kick our butts if we lose NCAR (and NOAA) at a time when climate change is increasing extreme weather events capable of crashing the economy.

DO NOT GIVE UP! Our advocacy is working. A key Senate committee has indicated that it will reject Trump’s proposed cuts to science agencies including NASA and the NSF. Keep speaking up and calling your electeds 🗣️🗣️🗣️

Nature: US senators poised to reject Trump’s proposed massive science cuts

Committee gives first hint that policymakers might preserve, rather than slash, funding for US National Science Foundation and other agencies.

“Going back right to the beginning, Superman’s storylines have defined good versus evil. Superman’s co-creator Jerry Siegel, a Jewish writer, said the rise of Nazism made him feel “the world desperately needed a crusader, if only a fictional one.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️ essay #Superman flipboard.com/@csmonitor/t...

Elite journalists wriggle & wriggle & try & try but they can not escape the fundamental dilemma: journalism is, by its nature, supposed to be on the side of accuracy, against lies & liars, but the GOP is lies & liars top to bottom. And for reasons of power & access, journalism can not say so.

"In one of his final public appearances leading the stations of the cross on Good Friday, Francis [said], “Today’s builders of Babel tell us that there is no room for losers and that those who fall along the way are losers. Theirs is the construction site of Hell.” www.thebulwark.com/p/a-pope-who...

The Day I Bought A Star (Hoshi o Katta Hi, 2006): A rare space-related short directed by Hayao Miyazaki "A young boy is tired of the city and escapes into the country. Two strangers trade him a strange seed. The boy accepts and the seed sprouts into a miniature planet, which continues to grow."

An illustration in a whimsical, painterly style depicts a fantastical scene with a central focus on a brown, vintage-looking tram car suspended in a vibrant, dreamlike sky. The tram car has glowing yellow windows, suggesting it is illuminated from within, and is positioned vertically, as if ascending or descending. Two small figures are visible inside the tram.

The background is a rich tapestry of floating islands and celestial bodies against a deep blue, star-speckled expanse. These islands vary in size and shape, some resembling small, self-contained worlds with houses, greenery, and water features. One large, spherical island dominates the upper right, showcasing fields, buildings, and a body of water. Another, more abstractly shaped island with glowing elements is visible on the left.

The gravitas gap between @petebuttigieg.bsky.social and Karoline Leavitt would be HUGE -- and it may be the only measurable advantage Dems get for a while. But the world is watching and need Dems to fight back. If we fight -- they will fight with us. If we fold -- they stand down.

I keep saying Dems need to do a daily briefing on Capitol Hill and fill the void, fact check the WH. Hire Pete Buttigeig and give him a staff to do this.

In 2023, @runforsomething.bsky.social recruited Justin Douglas to run for Dauphin County Commission. He flipped a seat by less than 150 votes - because of him, the county just forgave $65 million in pay-to-stay debt that former prisoners had racked up while incarcerated. boltsmag.org/jail-debt-an...
