Most publishers are too complacent to change. It’s up to the contenders to aggressively disrupt and reform academic publishing, because we can’t rely on the publishers. @continuous.foundation and @curvenote.com working with preprints with #ATscience activists are the best chance we have imho.

It’s so much worse than you can imagine. 6m papers published a year and I would say half of all submitting authors and reviewers will be using a ~30 year old piece of software to contribute to publication. Yes that’s right. 30 years old. Three decades. Pre-broadband. Maybe pre-web.

Just to be clear, this is the whole conversation. No data, no code, no context and you can make something up that looks like science, but has no depth or reality to it. When the output of science is a pdf, it is hard to tell the difference between what is real and what is made up.
