Does anyone recognize these pups? Their owner, whose identity is currently unknown, disappeared from Will Rogers State Beach in July. A bag of her belongings was also found in a nearby restroom. The dogs appeared well cared for but unfortunately are not microchipped.

Apropos of nothing in particular, thinking today about how psychologist/author Martha Stout says one of the most recognizable signs of a sociopath is someone who habitually behaves badly and then invites you to see them as the victim.

Most abusers are not abusive all the time. They can be charming and charismatic and can present as devoted, especially when in front of witnesses. Victims often tell ourselves that the caring persona is the *real* person and the abuse is some atypical behavior that will stop if we are loving enough.

There are still tons of people who ask why victims stay in abusive relationships and use that line of thinking to attack and undermine the credibility of victims. The actual mechanism of coercive control is still so misunderstood by the public—a victim staying actually makes perfect sense.

When people say "innocent until proven guilty," I hope they know that the vast vast vast majority of rapists and abusers are never "proven guilty." The status quo is that there is no due process for victims. If you require a conviction to believe victims, you're siding with perpetrators.
