If you think your story is too weird and won't sell, just remember that at one time in the 1990s the literal most expensive Bollywood movie ever made had a whole B plot about how Amitabh Bacchan's mother was a dolphin.

I was considering applying for a PhD, but if I have to rule out DOZENS of top schools in my chosen field over this bullshit and future uncertainty, idk if I even want to go ahead right now (if at all!)
A lot of people keep telling me that it’s possible to recover, but a PhD takes minimum 5 years to complete, so betting on the USA for a PhD now means betting that republicans won’t win the presidency during your studies. Sucker bet

Mamdani's channeling of Indian retail politics upending the entire US political framework is hilarious to watch, this is literally what you always do in desi politics, hug the person who called you names to show you're a saint and he's a piece of shit that voters should look down on- and it works

It took me eleven months to finally write about my experience in Hachijojima. Lovely island; I just went at a bad time. Might go there again once I’m over this. sabah97.medium.com/i-experience...

I’ve spent almost a year wanting to write an “objective” article about it, but it’s harder than you think.

Seriously, the proper response to someone admitting to using generative AI in their writing is “wow it must suck to be so lazy and untalented, have you considered doing something you’re actually suited to”
I don’t use generative AI to give me ideas, to draft, to research, to take any shortcuts whatsoever. I don’t use it at all. Get on my fucking level

sometimes I think that a lot of people out there maintain their iron control over "being a good person" (as a black-and-white contrast to "being a bad person") by keeping themselves in a perpetual state of anger, in case they make the mistake of loving something that turns out to be problematic
a part of me will always be filled with a little grief and anger toward Rowling - that such a terrible person created a beautiful world of magic and wonder that was a refuge for a weird little bullied, unpopular nerdy girl like me. people smugly saying "IT WAS ALWAYS BAD" doesn't take the grief away
“this person is bad so their work was always bad” is also a really dangerous view to take because it leads to - unconscious or not - a bias towards “but I do like this other person’s work, ergo they must be a good person” which, as we have seen over and over, is simply not true
What happens a lot on social media is when someone (Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman now Ed Brubaker) has allegations thrown at them people tend to leap out the woodwork saying "their work was never good." That helps no one as it's irrelevant. What matters is their actions and what they did.
You know the first sign to me that short form video was going to destroy society? The Amber Heard Johnny Depp trial. The vilification of Heard was actually sickening including from people who should know better.
none of the people complaining about el-sayed saying this actually think it's a bad message. most Americans have agreed that 9/11 was cynically used to get us into a pointless war that cost untold lives for close to two decades now. what they are actually objecting to is a Muslim talking about 9/11.

The value of Graham Platner is that right up until all his red flags came toppling down upon him is that he is the most naked example of the amount of grace & credibility Simply Being White grants you. Compared to Abdul El-Sayed, who has to re-earn every ounce of credibility he has on a daily basis.
Agreed. Graham platner was the purest and most obvious example of white privileged in action. Given plenty of excuses from all the blatant red flags, yet two Muslim men have to walk on eggshells saying the most non controversial statements, even when the media still tries to make it seem worse.
I continue to absolutely detest the word “Herstory.” Let’s leave aside that history comes from the Greek ῐ̔στορῐ́ᾱ (“inquiry”); it’s just ridiculous to separate out the experience of women from the umbrella of history. I don’t want two versions or a binary. I want women implicit in all histories.
there is just no way you can predict the sharp left turn it takes in the last sentence
This my favourite comment re the recipe
Please be vocal about not using AI. We have to normalize it. No "I'm not going to say that because it should be assumed. I'm not going to give them this". We don't have time for that shit ideological shit right now. NOW is the time to capitalize on waning favorability. Ppl want human made
The predictable Discourse is starting and I'm going to take a strong stand here: you can both want to abolish ICE and laugh really, really hard at Milo Yiannopoulos getting arrested by ICE after a decade of stoking the ethnonationalist hatred that led us to this point

This is the letter kids got at the end of Dolly’s Imagination Library. I defy you to read this and not cry.
It's also gotta be horribly demoralizing to the actual creative people you've hired to work on your production if you give them some "A.i." generated shit and say "LIKE THIS." That's no way to treat people and no way to do the best work with your collaborators.
I've always said there are legit uses for machine learning in science. That's great! Go for it! But I will likely never be interested in the consumer-facing generative and LLM bullshit that's linked with fraud, cheating, theft, right-wing ideology, deskilling, and even murder & suicide.
All of the LLMs stole from me. Most of the big "A.i." billionaires are horrifying right wingers. Consumer-facing generative "A.i." "writing" and "art" tools deskill people, cheat kids out of real education, spread falsehoods and disinfo, and violate privacy. So no, I ain't using that shit.
Apart from being shitty about folks' identities, calling real people "bad representation" is a category error. People are *the thing being represented*. A person can no more be "bad representation" than a mountain can be inaccurate – if it's not on the map, the problem is the map!
