People got really angry at me when I wrote this on Mastodon a few years ago, but it's true: post-consumer plastic recycling is functionally a myth, not just in the U.S. but globally. Odds are vanishingly close to zero that your plastic, faithfully put in the recycling bin, will ever be recycled.

So, for the uninitiated, the vast majority of AI startups — from search engines like Perplexity to legal software like Harvey to even Anthropic’s Claude subscriptions — do not bill users based on their actual token burn. When you search a query on Perplexity, Perplexity itself pays the per-million-token rate — for example, Claude Sonnet 4.6 costs $3 per million input tokens (about four characters) and $15 per-million output tokens (both the stuff it creates and the plans it makes to execute an output using chain-of-thought reasoning, which I explained here). You, the customer, pay a simple flat fee each month. As a result, you’re shielded from the actual cost of the prompt. You’re also shielded from the knowledge of the prompt’s cost.

I need white people in hella white states to think about what they are saying when they insist redistricting blue states will solve the problem that Black people in Memphis just got disenfranchised. Redistricting Colorado is not gonna solve the problem. There's like 16 Black people in Colorado.
