If you haven't read @oliviawaite.com's books before, now is a GREAT time to do it.
Today I'm starting The Trick, a newsletter going through every single Agatha Christie novel to analyze how she did it. Volume 1: Death on the Nile constancegrady.substack.com/p/the-trick-...

REALLY IMPORTANT: if you use ebay do NOT ignore the terms and conditions update. FFS (setting should be toggled off if you're in Europe but worth checking: click privacy notice link > section 9 Ebay & AI > expand AI model training > click 'right to object').
eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.
This is a big reason I shouted so much about "The Shabti," which I read this week. I loved it! And I read it because someone else (probably @clairewillett.bsky.social) had done some shouting about it. Now, maybe someone else will pick it up and love it just as much because of what I posted. :)
I cannot stress enough how helpful it is when you like a thing that someone created (like, say, a book they wrote) & you TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT. Word of mouth can be an incredible tool, yes, even if you don't think you're a fancy influencer with an incredible following. Your recommendations go places!

This is a brutally honest read. It’s not funny, and it’s not satire. And it needs to be said, which is a tragedy . www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/an-...

Truly excellent thread on #Romance and why narrative originality (often) is the result of working within genred tropes. Read it. #Romancelandia #Writing
Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.

Lovely story in the NY Times today about a 92-year-old mathematician and a high-school kid working together to produce a major result in topology. This kind of working together is the best part of science, and frankly of being human.
