A massive update: At least ~15 companies~ are selling scientists antibodies using faked validation data. We've documented 18,000+ manipulated images on 17,000+ products sold by leading laboratory suppliers including Thermo Fisher, Abcam, Santa Cruz Biotechnology, Millipore Sigma and Bio-Techne. 1/🧵

The Thermo Fisher situation keeps getting worse. We've now collected 450+ problematic images presented as verification data in TF's antibody catalog. This includes: 🖌️ Dozens more images with duplications or painting 🖨️ Hundreds of blots that all share the same background (behold slideshow below)

The world’s largest sand battery got through Finland’s harshest winter in years. 2,000 tonnes of sand, heated to 500-600°C by cheap power, feeding district heating in Pornainen. And it worked. Result from one install: oil down 100%, emissions down 70%. Industrial process heat is the real prize.

More about the Cowlitz Tribe's beaver relocation program, which is among the largest in the West. "Beavers are amazing ecosystem engineers and create high-quality, complex wetland habitats that support biodiversity and ecosystem properties that can help buffer projected impacts of climate change.”

Check out baby beavers on ‘Kit Cam’ thanks to Cowlitz Indian Tribe

The Cowlitz Indian Tribe recently launched a new livestream featuring a mother beaver and four kits born April 16 as they wait to be relocated.

Birdsky! I need advice. This little bird has been sitting unnaturally still near my back door, and didn't even move when my kid excitedly banged on the glass. It's def alive, but I think not healthy? Is there anything I can do to help it?

Last week I shared results showing large variability between Imaris/Arivis/Aivia vs Python/ImageJ/CellProfiler. Much was due to small code issues (x/y swaps, microns vs pixels). After fixing, results are much closer—no big log-scale gaps. Some variability remains, but large errors weren’t real.

Love is in the air at Edinburgh zoo. Pebbling marks the start of the breeding season for Gentoo penguins. Kids at Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity painted pebbles for the penguins to choose from and present to their mates.

Holy CRAP. Retired engineer takes random pics of *kids*, without consent or attribution, bins them into “autistic” or “not autistic”, and uploads that “data” for free on Kaggle. Well over a HUNDRED papers are published, 38 in Springer Nature, 25 in IEEE, using it. And no reviewers objected? WTF.🧪

Springer Nature retracts, removes nearly 40 publications

The dataset contains images of children’s faces downloaded from websites about autism, which sparked concerns at Springer Nature about consent and reliability.
