LIBERALS: Why do you people always say we have to destroy capitalism, all we have to do is elect enough Democrats and they’ll reform it into something that works for everybody COMMUNISTS: A company that got rich making shackles for slaves is still in business making restraints for migrant workers

Gillian Brockell@gillianbrockell.com · 2w ago

Lemme tell you about the angel of history being blown backwards into the future: The shackles these people have been put in are Hiatt brand, same company founded in 1780 to mass produce shackles for slaver ships.

It's kind of interesting to see this at the same time schools like Arizona and Syracuse are starting influencer degrees, a field in which most people make less than $15/yr and only 13% make more than $100k, even prior to 2024 when sponsorship money was flowing

"President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans ... Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music, and cosmetic certification programs will be hit the hardest." newrepublic.com/post/213446/...

Started listening to Madonna's new album out of idle curiosity and found myself going back to it enough to buy the CD and I am feeling oddly compelled to play it on repeat. It's like.... so many of her notable musical motifs and themes from decades, brought forward into the present

I'm incredibly honored to be one of the inaugural winners of the Ctrl-Z award. The sequence of events preceding and following this retraction were harrowing (and are honestly still stressful), but I hope this will be an opportunity for more open dialogue about mistakes + self-retraction in science.

The Center for Scientific Integrity is proud to announce the inaugural winners of the 2026 Ctrl-Z Award. Named for the universal keyboard shortcut for “undo,” the Ctrl-Z Award this year honors @cetaceanneeded.bsky.social and @katelaskowski.bsky.social for choosing transparency over reputation.

The most terrifying enshittification I've discovered has been learning that Microsoft Word documents no longer auto-save if you are not saving them to one of their own proprietary cloud services. I'm slapping control-S like it's 1999.

"Also wondering how many people just published that photo with her story without questioning." All of them. 100% of them. That total atrophy of critical thinking skills is exactly why we're stuck in a massive misinformation crisis.

Am wondering if they are related. Maybe the family used the name Margaret for several generations. Also wondering how many people just published that photo with her story without questioning. It’s more mysteriously incomplete than fake. RIP Margaret & Margaret

This is especially true on the left or left liberal end where a lot of people have fried their own brains on a litany of bigotries in order to justify being for the idea of the border regime, something that is younger than modern liberalism or republicanism and arguably younger than Marxism.

I think it also revealed just how quickly a bunch of otherwise very hard problems can be to solve with global collective action. The fuckin Ganga was running clear water for the only time in my lifetime because for 2 weeks nobody threw garbage in it. The canals in Venice had fish.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful
