to understand how all its nervous system functions coordinate to support its continual behavior - after all, life is not 1K repeated trials of moving dots (I can appreciate that). From that basis, we can then extend to more complex creatures and behaviors like complex and flexible problem solving.

“Mechanistic” must be the most abused word in research. Everyone want “mechanistic insights” but it means very different things for a geneticist vs a structural biologist or cell biologist.
