on the one hand quake 2 is the death of art. it might be *the* moment where video games go from abstract tone pieces of mood and place and colour, movement and music and interaction creating a new artform to Brown Military Shooter Oo-rah. on the other its a 10/10 pure gaming classic

So strange. I was recording this video to demonstrate a catastrophic bug in Blood West where every enemy in the entire world gets stuck in place... and then all of a sudden they all started moving again.

Blue Bottle Games, as a policy, does not use generative AI. It's something we've discussed as a team, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately, we decided it was not for us. Recently, while chatting with a colleague, she mentioned it was useful hearing our reasoning. So: Sharing time! 1/12

Prolific TV writer Katharyn Powers would have turned 83 today. She worked on tons of successful shows, but is probably best known as the writer of the worst episode of Star Trek ever aired AND arguably the worst episode of Stargate. A true pioneer.

Enjoying the hell out of Incision. Gameplay-wise it doesn't do anything that hasn't been done in lots of other retro shooters, but the world is so gross and beautiful that I can't put it down.

Screenshot from the game Incision, showing rusty old hallways in a very limited orange and red palette.A big cavern area with molten something flowing out of the wall and weird vines or fleshy fibers hanging from various surfaces.A dark, vaulted chamber filled with gravestones.Looking across a bridge while infernal steam rises around it. In the distance, barely visible, two sets of giant teeth.

I don't usually use Google so I hadn't seen this before, but... 1) the UnMaking has been 40 maps for the vast majority of its existence, 2) there are two maps in the wad so opposite of "compact" that they would break the engine if they were any bigger, and 3) WHAT LORE?

Google AI overview stating that "The UnMaking is a 33-map megawad for Doom 64 created by designer scwiba. Awarded the Machaward at the 2021 Cacowards, this technicolor nightmare mod features heavily stylized, compact maps, and also expands on the lore of the base game."

In case anyone is wondering how I "clocked" Platner, it was the fact that he is a literal mercenary with a Nazi tattoo. Maybe keep that in your back pocket

Carmack thinks it's a tragedy when AI doesn't get the love it deserves, but when over a hundred real human people get laid off from the company he created he "can't muster anger or outrage over it."

John Carmack twitter post:

"I have been trying to find something meaningful to say about the id Software layoffs.

My 'Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand' statement isn't aging well, and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month.

I'm saddened, but I can't muster anger or outrage over it. I don't have access to the books, but I suspect that id Software was a marginal business from Microsoft's perspective. I believe the reports that Minecraft revenues have been carrying several other studios.

To continue being produced long term, games need to succeed, not just be beloved.

Games are competing with every other option for spending your leisure time and money, and the competition is brutal.

You can't rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn't be your default belief. I don't think there is any obvious path that would have doubled the revenue from id games.

Could they have gotten more with a different pricing strategy?

Could they have created more things for fans to buy?

Could they have cost effectively marketed in a way that reached more players that would have loved and bought the games?

Could they have changed the game designs and broadened the appeal to more players without alienating existing ones?

Could they have produced the games at lower cost, faster or cheaper?

I really don't know.

The game isn't over yet, and I hope the studio rallies through."

Nintendo is trying to stop game preservation, Sony says you will never own anything, and Microsoft is laying off all their developers. An industry actively destroying its past, present, and future.

celebrating the good parts of america today. if you don’t think there are any good parts, just look to all the stuff the fascists are desperate to stifle

This is literally why there's a bipartisan effort to remove internet access from young people. It's an attack on queer people, leftists, and anyone who questions authority. They don't want our children finding out that MLK and Frida Kahlo were socialists or that Stonewall was a riot.

Having social media access made growing up gay 1 million times easier (I don’t think I would even know I was gay as a teen if it weren’t for social media), but it also made growing up progressive and informed possible. Social media was where I learned about abortion rights, for starters
