RFK Jr's CDC reportedly scaled back foodborne disease tracking last year, removing cyclospora from mandatory reporting. The CDC also lost roughly 3,000 employees since 2025. Now a cyclosporiasis outbreak has killed 2 and sickened thousands across 45 states. "Make America Healthy Again."

Oregon’s 1992 ballot measure 9 would have amended the state constitution to proclaim homosexuality a "abnormal, wrong, unnatural, and perverse" behavior The concept was to kill gay rights, starting in battleground states. It failed, but only by 44 to 56%. Same is happening now with trans rights.

Please stop saying “lockdowns.” There were never true lockdowns in the US, and it fuels far right narratives to repeat this inaccurate statement. You can say closures, you can say restrictions, or better, you can say public health measures which saved many lives.

Dr. Lucky Tran@luckytran.com · 6d ago

People still complain about “lockdowns” but we had none in the US. We had stay-at-home orders, where although businesses were closed, you could still go outside whenever you wanted. Other countries had far stricter rules, and yet have been much more accepting of them as they saved many more lives.

so much I wanted to quote here about why we as scientists seem to find ourselves in this current political situation: “When and why powerful and wealthy outsiders chose to pluck scholars and ideas from obscurity should be of key concern to those of us interested in the independence of science.”

I lived 41 years on this earth without hollandaise sauce, then a week ago I had hollandaise poutine and everything changed. Last night I enjoyed my first eggs benedict. Why did the people in my life let me live like this? Why did the world keep this secret from me? Obnoxious.

$229 billion = annual amount spent in USA on alcohol $166 billion = annual sports gambling handle in USA (excluding pred markets) $300 billion = annual total gambling handle in the USA (casinos + sports) $600 million = NIAAA annual budget $0 = annual federal research funding for gambling

#AcademicSky We talk a lot on here about AI-relevant concerns. But we should be talking more about gambling. Wow, that's a TON of money spent on risky activity. What could go wrong? fortune.com/2026/07/26/g...

1. This New York Post cover: “Thousands of 9/11 families demand Mamdani be banned from 25th-Anniversary” is a brazen lie. How do I know? I interviewed the organizer of the petition.

Austin police killed a 17-year-old Black child who called 911 while in distress. Three cops fired more than 20 rounds, killing him, because they thought he had a gun. It was a water bottle. The child was unarmed. Austin PD is calling it "suicide by cop." No, it's murder in cold blood by cop. 1/2

It is going to be interesting to see the stats on the number of foodborne illnesses over the last little while. Lettuce, cilantro, eggs now… It’s like having an oversight and regulatory body with enforcement powers is important as business has shown time and again that it cannot regulate itself.
