An evening conversation with @ftw.bsky.social and @mindtheflap.bsky.social devolves into a discussion of the Great Emu War 1932, memento mori. avocado bathroom suites, the evilness of the name "Andrew" and whether Daleks have a trade union.
I look forward to hearing the sigh from @raaleh.bsky.social when he inevitably has to read this and then torture the rest of the hogs with it. I've already put the money aside for the live show.
"Of all the books I have ever reviewed that purported to offer a serious thesis, this is without question the most deranged."
While a laudable aim, as we shouldn’t be wasting resources, the fact there is an ad on UK TV with children telling adults “Let’s Save Water”, after over 30 decades of greed & lack of investment BY the privatised water industry, is galling to be polite about it. The failure IS privatisation of water.
Rather pleased that my amazing colleague, David Leboff, someone who has spent over four decades making the Underground more accessible and inclusive, has won the Life Time Achievement Award this evening If you like London Underground, go get one of his books. Well worth it!
it's not the only problem in the world but it seems very clear to me that better ADHD support leads to better real-world outcomes, and that the delta between outcomes for the well-supported and unsupported is frequently enormous
Systematic review relevant to the discourse on diagnoses and meds. "ADHD was associated with increased all-cause mortality, suicide mortality, unintentional or intentional injury mortality, and natural-cause mortality, whereas ADHD medication use was associated with reduced all-cause mortality."
I've had one of those work days that has left me exhausted. Not from anything particularly physical, but from the constant draining feeling that I am fighting a loosing battle.
I love that work have decided to start removing computers and replacing them with docking stations for us to use laptops etc with. In other news I'm on the fifth blue screen of death so far this morning. I tried to raise a service request to report it and crashed again.
I watched the first episode of Visionquest and it is always a delight to see James Spader turn up, apparently doing a turn as "what if Alan Shore was also a murderous robot". I genuinely expected him to call Vision "Denny" at least once.
Went for a lovely amble earlier, some beautiful autumnal colours starting to appear in Cheam and Nonsuch Park. Ground still absurdly dry and cracked though, I do hope we get some decent months of rain. Until then, I'll enjoy the colours and cooler air.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
It has suddenly, and finally, cooled down enough that I actually put a jumper on when I went out to the gym this morning.

Oh god ... A friend (only works overnight) makes a joke about being a nighthawk. I send a picture of a certain Edward Hopper painting "What's that?" *Sigh*
saw this on Instagram and it so perfectly encapsulated my rage
Swathes of UK economy are owned by foreign investors. No tax is deducted from billions paid to them in dividends. USA, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden have a dividend withholding tax for foreign investors. UK could do the same, generate billions. Why are super-rich privileged?
Here’s how the chancellor can raise the billions needed to improve the quality of life of millions
