Yes, it's me, Simon Fox from VRChat/Second Life/That artwork you liked/etc.

I've been trying to write a response to Gomi's post here... But there's just so much that I could say. I have been involved in cons long enough (10+ years!) that I feel like the burnout cycle is speeding up a bit, I'm seeing people tired after a third of the time I've spent doing it.

I've been thinking since I stepped down from FWA leadership about how much furry conventions have grown, and how much we now ask of the volunteers who keep them running. I decided to put those thoughts into words, and I'd appreciate it if you'd give them a read: gomi.gay/blog/26-09-0...

Once again, it would be super nice if conventions were more upfront about THEIR costs. The hotel/convention center is not putting those tables and chairs on the floor just out of kindness. Cons are nickled and dimed on everything. Many furry cons already heavily subsidize dealers rooms.

Begging and pleading for furry cons to start giving complimemtary badges with tables like other cons do. Especially as they start charging $3-500+ for spots and $100+ for badges. My mom is helping me for 3 hours and I might have to pay an extra $100 for that. This feels really shitty.

Fucking around: Figuring out ways to bypass the hotel checking for room keys at Megaplex 2025. Finding out: The hotel cracking down on people sneaking in in 2026.

"Pronouns used to be a funny joke, Hank. Until the government tried to tell me I couldn't use them anymore. So now I'm adamant about making sure trans people are gendered right. Not for their sake. But because I'll be damned if the US government is going to tell me what words I can and can't use."

I was able to obtain two very pricey wireless microphone transmitters a while back, because batteries exploded in them and they got tossed in e-waste. The batteries did not really leak into the electronics part so I was able to clean them up. They look like shit but *mostly* work.

We had someone at work with just an absolutely insanely massive R&D budget, who would just buy like $30,000 pieces of equipment and then not do anything with them. It is always fun to boot something from them up and it's like "this was last booted one time in 2022".

the cons are not for profit businesses but every single company they interact with are and oftentimes the con is a captive audience trapped in contracts and paying exorbitant fees for AV and food & beverage. these people running cons are your friends and doing it for your enjoyment.

i don’t know who needs to hear this but conventions cost money to run and when you see them finding ways to make money that’s because they need it. for goods and services. reg tiers exist and higher tier benefit ls exist to keep the cost for the majority of attendees lower.

HOT TAKE: Many of the things we call "drive-thrus" should actually be referred to as "drive-bys". Please find my scientific evidence attached. Thank you for your understanding

a diagram that uses three crudely handmade 3D renders of a fictional restaurant called “Burger Monarch”.

the first has a drive-thru made out of a tunnel through the building.
“This is a drive-thru. Your car is entering the building through one side, and leaving through the other. QED.”

the second has a canopy attached to the side of the building, with a car underneath it.
“This is a drive-thru. Your car is passing through a structure that’s attached to the building. I think that’s close enough to count.”

the third just has a window on the side of the building, with a car parked next to it.
“This is NOT a drive-thru. Your car is never enclosed at any point within this ordering process. I think this should actually be called a drive-by.”

I know this is an ad but it absolutely infuriates me how this shit lighting style is so pervasive and the hot podcast lighting style. It is trash. "Yes, I don't want to see half of the people on screen!!! Please give me LESS light!!! - Statements dreamed up by the utterly Deranged

Enjoying the fictionalization of TV broadcasting in "Disclosure Day". The entire staff of the station seem to be in the studio in this scene. A makeup person, on set? In Kansas City? Aliens living among us is more believable! Also why would they using the soft portable teleprompters in a studio?
