@ironeconomist.bsky.social · 4mo agoThis is such incredible abject nonsense. If the straight stays closed ordinary people will have to use less oil and gas. Price is the fairest rationing mechanism that incentivises people who can to switch and to reduce consumption.
From today, Labour has increased the minimum wage to £12.71 an hour, cut energy bills by £117, frozen prescription charges, expanded sick pay and brought in day one rights at work. Not bad for a government that’s supposedly “no different”.

There’s been a turn in a lot of left/liberal moral thought over the past decade away from individual culpability and toward analyses of structural forces that generate bad behavior. But I’m increasingly convinced that those structural forces can’t be confronted while individuals enjoy impunity.

And because it's been so long since the politics of tax was central to voting behaviour, it's become a lot easier for people to believe that they are left-wing across the board when in fact they are primarily social liberals.
