I just think that risking your life at a moment's notice to save people you've never met in exchange for no money is a better expression of patriotism than dressing up like a Poundshop paramilitary and intimidating families with kids trying to get onto a ferry.

Let it be known that yesterday the baby got her first SHOES. They are dear little SHOES. She was not at all sure about SHOES. She did however like the long blonde hair and sparkly bracelet of the teenager measuring her, which helped.

Hotel I’m in seems to be the chosen/conference hotel for a huge group of very cheerful middle-aged/elderly rockers in black band t shirts. They’re having a lovely time and seem v friendly and good fun. I am delighted by them. Hurrah subcultures.

My only parenting hack is to compile a zip pouch of safe items the baby believes to be contraband, and deploy it in a manner which lets the baby believe she is opening it in a feat of monumental cunning.

Struggling to work out why Jenrick would single out these three Commonwealth countries rather than, say, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, whose citizens have exactly the same rights. It’s a head-scratcher.

Absolutely cannot fathom people saying nice things about Dolly Parton with the addition that they didn’t much care for her music. Not because it’s rude but because — JOLENE??? 9 TO 5?? HERE YOU COME AGAIN? I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU? It’s like saying you’ve never much cared for colours

I can't believe the amount of recent history revisionism in the UK. Response to Polish immigration was so severe that it successfully led to Brexit. BREXIT. And tanked British economy. This happened last decade, you can just Google it.

Post on X Remember in early 2000s thousands of Polish men immigrated over to UK cause their economy crashed but no one said fuck all cause they came to work, minded their own buisness an left our kids alone.....

Response Most Poles who emigrated to the UK in the early 2000s remember something completely different and photo of xenophobic graffiti

Oh and how could we forget fellow Tory recycled rubbish - Nadhim Zahawi - who claimed £6000 on expenses for heating his stables or another - Lee Anderson - who claimed £220,000 in business expenses for 2020/21 - just after telling parliament he thought food bank users couldn’t budget/cook properly.

If Reform wants to crack down on benefit fraudsters, I hope they don't forget that Suella Braverman claimed £25,000 in second home allowance while living rent free with mum and dad

Columnist Class hounding a Black academic for fun, over claims in his memoir that rudimentary research show to be true, doubling down because they've got a good anti "woke" narrative going now & falling over each other to defend the sweaty little white supremacist whose racist blog kicked it off

Palin in Death of Stalin, saying 'Rod Liddle would be loving this' instead of 'Stalin would be loving this'

kathleen stock: being neurodivergent should be a barrier to entering academia manchester museum: would you like to see one of our snail collections? :) our scientists have more than one :))

Plaque at Manchester Museum:

EXPLORING VARIATION
The Museum has several collections of snails put together by scientists who studied inheritance and evolution. Arthur Stelfox (1883-1972) was interested in the ways that different shell patterns and colours are inherited. He bred snails of different varieties with one another over a period of sixty years. Collections like this are still used by scientists, who are trying to answer new questions.

The only AI I will ever respect is one where I describe in reasonable lay language what I want to print and then the printer does it without arguing, jamming, or sliding the words off the paper at a smudgy angle

I've read this list three or four times and I really can't find the thing I'm supposed to be outraged by. One cereal bowl?! Stainless steel cutlery?! Two pillows?! Where are we putting them, the Ritz?!

I remember an older academic colleague warning me off motherhood “every child you have means a book you won’t write”. Which is not the spirit of this tweet at all but I only now recognise what an awful thing it was to say to me.

Sometimes in a library I imagine each book as years of an author’s life such that you are standing amidst uncounted hours of effort and concentration like some oasis of meaningful time.
