Crater Fact Friday ☄️DID YOU KNOW☄️ about peak-ring basins? These craters typically form at sizes larger than complex craters, and have an interior ring of peaks surrounding the crater's center (hence the name). They can be found on Mercury, Venus, the Moon, Earth, and Mars!

Crater Fact Friday ☄️DID YOU KNOW☄️ Layered ejecta craters are hypothesized to form in the presence of subsurface ice, where volatiles are fluidized upon impact. This means these craters can be used as a way to identify subsurface volatiles and resources on other planets!

I can't stop staring at these photos. This is what Earthset looks like—our homeworld setting behind the Moon. And compare the dark, cratered surface of the Moon to the blue oceans and swirling clouds on our own planet. If there's a starker illustration of our lifegiving world, I've yet to see it.

None of Orientale's rings are the initial crater itself, which would fall somewhere between the two innermost rings. The initial transient crater formed by the impact would have been obliterated by subsequent deformation, which would have included extensive rebounding of material inside the crater.

Some lunar vocabulary in case you're following along with the #Artemis II flyby: * albedo: reflectiveness (high albedo=very shiny) * mare/maria(plural): from Latin for "sea," dark regions on the Moon, which are dried lava basins * terminator: the line of the transition between sunlight & darkness

And JWST is actually a bad example because it is the expensivest space mission ever. Do this comparison for a smaller mission producing mapping or survey data that’ll be useful for unforeseen studies for decades and decades — Magellan, LRO, Mars Global Surveyor, WISE, SPHEREx…

I also have to point out that the most expensive space telescope (JWST) cost about $500 million/year. We spent 1000x that much on AI development in 2025. Data collection is essential for discovery...and it's remarkably cheap compared to many other things we do routinely. 🧪
