Retired and off to new adventures. Married to Susan for 49 years. Seeing eye human to a blind rescued Golden Retriever. Mandatory retirement at 70 years of age for all government employees; elected, appointed, and career. Protect democracy.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

Probably more helpful to think of them not so much as “Canadian wildfires” but rather “climate change wildfires currently consuming Canada”

“I think we are seeing a hunger that is not just felt by New Yorkers, but frankly by Americans from coast to coast, for a new kind of politics, one that puts working people at the heart of it.” —Mayor Zohran Mamdani

There are no economical benefits from datacenters to communities. Convenience stores have more employees, and most of the employees will be shipped in from out of state. Any financial gain to the community will be dwarfed by the increase in electric utility rates. And the noise is unforgiving.

Raise your hand if you knew the Knicks were going to lose the minute the asshole’s presence at the game was announced. That SOB ruins literally everything he touches.

The stories & photos from today’s voting rights marches in Alabama deserve to be seen by people who weren’t able to stand there in person. If this piece moves you, please share it widely & help make sure these voices aren’t lost in the noise of a crowded news cycle. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

More context on this #Artemis II image: * This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right * The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon: ☀️🌍🚀🌕

A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)

NEWS: Bette Midler just released a remake of Woody Guthrie’s classic protest song “All You Fascists Bound to Lose,” updated to fit the current moment and urge action ahead of the midterms. You have to listen to this.

When we topple the Trump regime we should claw back every dime his family pilfers from the U.S. Treasury. Include all the fines & restitution he allowed fraudsters to get out of paying via corrupt pardons. Costing Americans billions. Stop MAGA now.
