feeling a very deep pain thinking about teen boys becoming so filled with hate that they chose to try to commit mass murder. adorned with fascist iconography and spewing hate rhetoric, then ending their young, ignorant lives. murderers, to be sure. but children, too. indoctrinated. poisoned. awful.

You have to actively and repeatedly make your place unsafe for Islamaphobes, misogynists, antisemites, predators, homophobes, terfs. You have to do it once, and then you have to do it again, because they'll come back the moment they think they're allowed.

Given the prevalence of antisemitism in society, if your movement is large enough, it's there. If you don't think it is, it's probably because you either don't recognize it as antisemitism or you're ignoring it. (Same with misogyny or homophobia). Movements aren't "safe" unless we make them safe.

Perpetual reminders: Antisemitism is Jew hatred, not hatred of Semites as a category. It is a word that was created in the modern era to sanitize hatred of and discrimination against Jews. Having Jews in your movement does not mean it’s impossible for it to be antisemitic.

I am begging people not to be weird about an normal religious practice for people who choose to become jewish.

This "New York Times" op-ed on antisemitism on the left does itself no favors by comparing Hasan Piker saying Orthodox Jews are "inbred" - legitimate, indefensible antisemitism - with calling Israel a "fascist settler colonial apartheid state," which is legitimate if heated political debate.

I need to people to understand that believing in "some wacky conspiracy theories" IS LITERALLY WHAT ANTISEMITISM IS. The core claim of racism is "Other races are inferior to us." The core claim of antisemitism is "Jews are engaged in a conspiracy against us."

Hirschfeld's Jewishness cannot be untangled from why the Nazis came for his library; what separates Nazism from fascism is the belief that Jews are the corrupters of society, in this case, by promoting LGBTQ culture.

On this day in 1933, Nazis raided the Magnus Hirschfeld library in Berlin. The world’s greatest collection of LGBTQ books and scientific papers were looted and later burned, erasing decades of research into sexuality and gender identity. ‘Where they burn books, in the end they will burn humans too’.

Not a new thought but the irritating thing about framing Bundists vs Zionists as some Good Jew/Bad Jew debate is that it doesn't lead us anywhere useful

It really bothers me that what gets glossed over in The Discourse is that Nazi symbols are not just offensive. They hurt people. They can thrust survivors back into the worst moments of their lives. No matter what the person wearing them knew or meant. I wish there were more compassion about that.

5. I'd recognize a Totenkopf. So would any Shoah survivor or descendant of one. And if you've ever seen a survivor forced into a memory by a symbol or a word, you know, it's not just "offensive". It's severely traumatizing. It does harm. And I think almost every discussion of the tattoo skips that.

I don't know if Platner's a Nazi or just a pissy little edgelord who didn't get rid of his oopsie Nazi tattoo until he had to. But "he was shirtless at a wedding w/ Jews & nobody said anything" is not proof of anything other than how unlikely people are to confront Nazis or pick fights at weddings.

The ADL spent considerable time and resources lobbying for the Voting Rights Act in 1965, because they understood that Jews are safest in a liberal pluralistic democracy. The ADL has said nothing at all about the Voting Rights Act this week. Glad to see one American Jewish organization still is.
