A common counterpoint to this is that many great sports commentators were never strong players. That's true (although less than it once was!), but not really relevant, for reasons incl medium, historical accident, competition, etc But the biggest reason is what I call the Law of Inverse Popularity

You don't need to win majors to be a strong commentator, but being a strong player helps a lot in lots of ways, incl knowing when to talk, regardless of whether you wanna find time for analysis or schtick or storytelling. Most strong FG commentators have been strong players first for good reasons
