HAPPY BOOK LAUNCH DAY to @sesmith.lol! Don't let the title fool you, this book is about way more than cats or even pet loss — it's about grief, the way Western culture is fucking weird about it, and how we can do better for ourselves, our friends, and our community. bookshop.org/a/118950/978...

Patriotism isn't about building walls, punishing immigrants, cutting taxes for the rich, attacking the press, or dividing us by race & faith. True patriots don't pander to divisiveness or hate. They work to confirm the "WE" in "We the People of the United States."

For real. You want me to come up with a gut wound that renders someone infertile, or talk about the pros or cons of a magical/cursed IUD? I've got you covered. Describing a field tracheostomy with a straw, a Leatherman, and some smoldering glances at the hot ex-Navy Seal helping you escape? Done.

SCHISM! SCHISM! SCHISM! "The seamless garment of Christ, which Pope Leo XIV had urged in a heartfelt letter on June 29 "not to tear apart," has now, in the Vatican's view, been torn." paging @clairewillett.bsky.social - this is the first I've seen from the press office.

this is why I do think it's very important for more progressive Catholics not to fall back on "well these guys aren't REAL Catholics" - even if they're excommunicated and that's technically legally true! - because they are the heirs of a brutally ugly legacy we're still reckoning with

there are a lot of areas where SSPX and Vatican II clash, and I can't say which was ultimately the straw that broke the camel's back on THEIR part; but for ME, I would say yes, antisemitism is the most urgent of the cancerous tumors Pope Leo needs to cut out of the church body by excommunication

So, I guess I knew that reconciliation with the Jewish faith to some extent was part of Vatican II, but would it be right to brand this as an antisemitism schism?

like I said upthread, I am NOT a John Paul II girlie, but he did come up in the Polish Resistance. one of his most important moves as Pope was framing opposition to the Nazis as a holy act - as in, canonizing numerous Catholics who sacrificed their lives during WWII to protect Jewish people

a Benedict appointee (so by definition, someone on the conservative end of the scale) writing a letter saying "SSPX has gone off the deep end, stay away" is sort of like when even Bush administration officials think the Trump administration went too far

sharing with alt text because I think a lot of what’s going on here is really important: specifically —invalidating all Sacraments (FORBIDDEN to take Eucharist from them!!) —imploring SSPX priests to jump ship —implication that seeking spiritual counsel from SSPX clergy is bad for your soul

St. Junipero Serra, Priest

Dear Diocesan Family.
It is with great sadness that I must share with you that the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) is in formal schism with the Roman Catholic Church due to today's unauthorized episcopal ordinations of four bishops without papal mandate (see Canon 1013).

Those bishops ordained today, and the bishops who consecrated them, have incurred an automatic excommunication whose lifting is reserved solely to the Pope. Such disobedience to Pope Leo XIV as the Successor of St. Peter, the first Pope to whom Christ entrusted his Church, is considered a schismatic act, and gravely harms the unity of the Church for which Christ so fervently prayed the night before he died.

This action by the SSPX constitutes a formal separation from the Church's communion and as such makes it illicit and forbidden for Roman Catholics to participate in and receive the Sacraments from bishops and priests associated with the Society of St. Pius X, including Baptism, Confirmation, the Holy Eucharist, Penance, Marriage, and Holy Orders. The only exception provided for in Canon Law is the Sacrament of Penance when there is a danger of death (see Canons 976 and 1752).

It is of great importance to realize that the division between the Society of St. Pius X and the Roman Catholic Church is not simply about the celebration of the Mass and the Sacrament.

The SSPX repudiates and denounces the teaching of the Second Vatican Council, in particular, ecumenism, religious liberty, collegiality of the bishops with the pope, and the Church's understanding of, and relationship with Judaism.Out of care for souls, I must instruct the faithful of the Diocese of Ogdensburg to avoid participating in the activities of the Society of St. Pius X at St. Therese Chapel in Nicholville, NY as well as their schools.

I invite those who have been assisting at Mass or the Sacraments administered by the priests of the Society of St. Pius X to now look for spiritual counsel and nourishment at the traditional Latin Mass and Sacraments celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Potsdam, NY or St. Mary's Church in Evans Mills, NY.

To our brother priests in the Society of St. Pius X who may not wish to be part of this break with the See of Peter, I am always open to receiving you, and assisting you in remaining within the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

At this time, we pray fervently for Church unity, and ask Mary, Mother of the Church, to
intercede for the Church and her members in this moment of sad division.

With care and concern, I ask God's blessing upon all who dwell within the boundaries of
the Diocese of Ogdensburg. "Father, may we be one."

Faithfully yours in Christ,
Bishop of Ogdensburg

Bishop of Ogdensburg, NY notes SSPX “schismatic act” incurred today; instructs Diocese not to go to Church run by SSPX, but to seek “spiritual counsel and nourishment” at TLM in nearby parishes.

it would be entirely defensible - politically and doctrinally - based on what happened today for Leo to say that EVERYONE who attended or participated in the consecration of heretical bishops should get the boot. they were there because they enthusiastically support the bishops’ heretical beliefs!
