I love Stampede; it's my favourite time of year, bar none. That said, this #yyccc debate is something to behold. Council is actively debating using public resources for the benefit of a private company. Another example of: "Politics: Who Gets What, When, How" (Lasswell 1936).

Here's some context. The 2023 provincial general election cost $36.7M and needed 13,000 workers. This 10 ballot referenda will need 60,000 workers. Alberta is basically doing the equivalent of ~5 general elections at once. I guess Premier Smith has an extra ~$200M lying around? 💲🗳

That means Elections Alberta will print 45 million (!!) ballots. After polls close, by law, it has 48 hours to count all of them. It's currently recruiting 60,000 workers to pull it all off.

Do read Jared's piece. The feelings he talks about are complex, multi-faceted and hard to measure. Based on our own imperfect way of capturing those feelings (the resentment index), it does seem like one group of Albertans is warming up to the Federation while the other hasn't moved one bit.

Absolutely nothing is stopping John Cornyn, Tillis, Murkowski, & Paul from caucusing immediately with Democrats & giving them control of the Senate. The same is true of Thomas Massie & any 2 retiring GOP Reps in the House. It is a choice to continue caucusing with the authoritarian personality cult.
