It's Textile Tuesday, and you know what that means: a piece by artist Faig Ahmed called "The Dragons of Karabakh" that's woven to look like an antique Central Asian carpet is melting off the wall into a puddle. More about the artist here: faigahmed.com

A red, blue, yellow and white work of textile art by Faig Ahmed that appears to be a traditional Central Asian carpet but is woven to look as through it's melting onto the floor in a puddle. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Let us examine the set of circumstances that led to this Eulimnadia clam shrimp living out its entire live cycle in a styrofoam cup on the ground.

This is the tragic yet logical result of a decades-long project—undertaken by rightwing politicians and “business-minded” administrators alike—to distort the meaning of higher education, to deny the intrinsic value of the pursuit of knowledge, to deprive us all of richer, more purposeful lives.

President Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/aaAEu6v

Regency-era mugs, gifts for #19thc children who managed to stick to their books & learn to read. Their mottoes are grim but maybe necessary admonitions, too, for the academic who's soldiering on while coming to terms with the fact that it's August now. I.e. I feel seen. #AcademicLife

The motto painted on a red background on this little mug reads "Idleness Brings Disgrace." The motto painted on the purple-ish background of this little mug is "Be Willing to do Well without Praise."

spent the morning deep cleaning in the doctors office and apothecary. look how satisfying, the way these glass eyes shined right up made me very happy before after

8 glass eyes in a box with dividers so they have individual compartments. they're dusty and dull the same eyes, plus more after cleaning, they're shiny and bright and the color of the irises comes through so much better now

here's a fun lil exercise for cis people: how many articles would a publication have to print calling for your extermination before you would expect people who care about you to stop giving them money? and how would you feel if their excuse for still supporting them is some fuckass crossword puzzle?

As a Religious Studies professor, this directly targets my livelihood in a way that makes a mockery of any supposed profession of concern the administration has ever expressed for me as a Jewish person on campus.

When trying to understand the Right Wing, it helps to realize they have spent their lives pretending to be someone they aren't and sublimating parts of themselves they hate and that they have to project that pain and hatred onto others because the tension is so unbearable it will destroy them.

If you're curious about how the right is going to try to frame the horrific fires in Spokane Washington, it looks like they plan to blame them on homeless people, local (DEM) city leadership, and state (DEM) mismanagement of forests. So, many of the same frames as the LA fires.

Screenshot of a Facebook post by "Jim Walsh" posted 9 hours ago. The caption reads: "Still more weekend reading. From a woman in eastern WA. The silver lining to these disastrous fires: They may wake some 'I'm not political' people up to the real effects of bad public policy choices." The shared post below claims Spokane is being destroyed by massive fires, that the writer's house and neighborhood are gone, and blames Democrats for cutting firefighting funding and releasing "drug addicts and criminals" who they accuse (w/o evidence) of setting the fires. It ends "I'm now homeless in Spokane. I am numb." A diagonal red "Framing Contests" watermark is overlaid across the screenshot. The post shows 3.5K reactions, 1.2K comments, and 1K shares.
