🧪⚒️ Notice how newer updates about the Kamchatka quake say M8.8, though it was M8.7 earlier? That doesn't mean something changed about the quake - it just means people were able to consider more data in the magnitude calculation. This kind of revision happens a lot, especially for bigger quakes.
Scary example of why scientists advise people to "drop cover hold" rather than "run outside" during strong shaking.

The long-term tectonic motion that GPS sensors measure is usually extremely slow, but earthquakes can cause sudden shifts of the land. GPS data help reveal the peak ground displacement caused by the ongoing earthquake to more quickly and accurately estimate its magnitude.
Let's take a look at some field photos showing the normal fault ruptures (Taken by field survey team of the Institute of Geology, China Earthquake Administration).

very late to this news, but awesome to see Sentinel 1C is launched and operating! More info on why this is a big deal in the video below from @uk-comet.bsky.social now if only NASA would launch their NISAR mission....
Last night satellite #Sentinel1C launched into space! It will join its sibling to restore the Sentinel-1 constellation, gathering more frequent, global, accurate data to monitor changes on the Earth's surface. It will aid COMET research into #volcanoes🌋and #earthquakes🌎 and support event response.

Today’s M5.9 shallow reverse faulting earthquake in China occurred in a seismically active region, with significant population centers nearby. There are early reports of casualties and significant damage. 🧪⚒️

The M3.2 earthquake near Berridale (15km E of Jindabyne) NSW earlier this week has been followed by at least 6 additional events to date. This area has previously hosted several seismic clusters of <M2.5 as well as more significant events, eg. 1885 M4.6 and 1959 M5.3 earthquakes ⚒️🧪
The palm-lined trace of the San Andreas Fault near Indio, CA. In the distance is Pushawalla Canyon. North America is to the left; Pacific Plate to the right. Fault gouge produced due to the grinding action of the fault acts as a vertical barrier to groundwater flow; that's why the palms grow here.
