Can cooperation entail conflict? What are the security externalities of changes in economic cooperation? Does increased trade cooperation of the trading partner with another country shape security views amongst citizens in China and the USA?

This paper shows: people in the US and China see trade deficits as a power weakness. Americans who think China will overtake the US view bilateral trade deficits with China especially negatively (this holds for different political orientations and social-demographic backgrounds).

New article accepted at CPS. @denis-cohen.bsky.social @thmskrr.bsky.social and I analyze how rental market risk affects radical right support. Combining data on local rent increases with the SOEP, we find that individuals facing increasing local rents become more likely to support the AfD. 🧵

Main findings: - Trade-offs between geoeconomic and development objectives vary across instruments - Sustainability-related instruments such as CBAM or EUDR are likely to be most detrimental for developing countries - EU makes little use of differential treatment to off-set such effects
