Arthur was born in 1884 in Leeds. The Society was set up to popularise his many books (not just for children) and encourage research into his life and work. https://arthur-ransome.org/

Yes. We had a long conversation about kids books. Ones currently reading swallows and amazons to his daughter. Makes me want to find a kid so I can read to it.

I maintain that "but Uncle Jim said that Amazons were ruthless" is one of the funniest lines in literature. I think I'm probably Titty. 🙃 Also Jo in Little Women (obvz) and Petrova in Ballet Shoes.

My theory on this, having grown up on older 'classic' kids books, is that they often featured *groups* of kids, boys and girls - Swallows & Amazons, Coot Club, Famous Five, Secret Seven, 5 Children and It, Silver Sword, Secret Garden etc. Yes, there was division, but also lots of books for both...

John Pearson TARS Secretary 1st March 1938 – 3rd May 2026 ‘He died living’ and doing what he loved. “John had a sudden heart attack on the Isle of Lewis. He had been our Secretary since 2017. He fulfilled the role perfectly, and is sorely missed by TARS. A keen hill walker he bagged all 282 Munros

A cloudy, rain-threatening day, 27 TARS gathered and ticketed at Waterhead for a 1 hour cruise to Lakeside on 'Teal' (Barrow built 1936) a three decked ship with excellent facilities. Original capacity 700, now reduced to 533 with a crew of 6. Loudspeaker commentary gave us little factual jewels.

In July, Jim Ring, TARS East committee member welcomed Mikako Tarashima and a group of visitors from the Arthur Ransome Club of Japan to Hunters Yard on the Broads, home of 'Swallow' and 'Amazon'. The ARCJ will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year.

For TARS Members. On Zoom. Take turns to read a few pages - it's up to you whether you prefer to read or listen. Don't worry if you can't make every session - catch up on your own ready for the next one. The book is The Picts and the Martyrs with sessions 4pm-6pm on Sundays.

Swallows and Amazons. Start in the Lakes, introduce the D's, go as far as Pigeon Post Spin off in the Broads (D's and locals) Dream Sequence for Peter Duck (skip Missee Lee) Final season is Picts and Martyrs then straight into Great Northern ? 20-30 solid story telling hours there.

Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome? There are 12 books in the series. TBH the problem may be that even in the ‘60s I found them a bit old fashioned. That could well just be me.
