One thing a lot of ppl don't realize is that most of the free world has liquidated the material basis for a creative slacker class, and this is a large part of why mass media has become so sterile. Your art has to pay your godawful rent from Day 1 and you can't take risks with the rent money.

What made so many cultural centers of the past - interwar Paris, 70s NYC East Side, 90s Seattle - was that young artists could live and feed themselves on a pittance, leaving them time and energy to work on their art.

"When the first of August came round, the Professor realized he had pleasantly trifled away nearly two months at a task which should have taken little more than a week." -Willa Cather (from The Professor's House, 1925)

Every time I walk up Keefer St I'm newly grateful for our wisdom in preserving a CULTURAL ASSET (parking lot) instead of letting CAPITALIST DEVELOPERS erect a soulless MONUMENT TO GREED (housing and community amenities). It would be terrible if, for example, there was a seniors centre there!

After she lost, a lot of people were saying “oh I hope she learns from this, she still has a lot to give” etc. I hope these people now notice that she has instead refused to endorse the candidate who beat her and begun spewing lies blaming AIPAC, who actively opposed the winner!

i don't know if it's a matter of bad faith or reading comprehension but watching someone ask "is X an effective way to achieve Y" and get dunk-mobbed by people shouting "lol this chud doesn't believe in Y" challenges some of my hopes for democracy

just remembered the time I took someone on a date to a documentary about nuclear annihilation. I asked the director a really annoying question. It didn't work out but Sarah I hope you're doing well

I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said but this is an act of abject cowardice. All the endless hand-wringing about towers and concentrating development on existing rental areas, and when the opportunity comes to do something about it everyone except Lucy votes for the status quo.

Ok, they severed the SES part, so this is the vote on the main part of it: A-J. And, the Villages Plan is dead. This hurts. ABC, COPE, and the Greens are all unwilling to take even quite modest action on expanding low-rise apartment areas.

This is Mike's partner Sylvia Fuller - I am so sorry to say that Mike was found unresponsive while mountain biking yesterday and died despite the best efforts of other riders and Squamish EMS. Thank you to Squamish Search and Rescue for carrying him out and taking care of our dog. We are shattered

If you want to talk deterrence, consider the likely nature of the threat - interference, influence operations, the spillover of violence and extremism from the US, up to military intervention and invasion. In all those cases, rebuilding conventional strength is our best and most achievable bet.

Get in, there’s a new secret political influence campaign paying people to post. This time, a network targeting people in Michigan. First paid to post about how hard it is to afford groceries and gas, the accounts have gone hard in recent days, supporting Haley Stevens. www.ms.now/news/haley-s...

Vancouver council last night, where the hotel union president is asked yes/no if she asked Americans to call in again: "Well, first of all, I'm not under the court of law. I'm not under oath, and you have no legal, judicial responsibility. So I do not respond to questions with malicious intent."
