Our storm really pounded Cape Breton overnight. Via Cape Breton Mesonet, totals are already in the 100-200+ mm range for much of the Island. ECCC has upgraded the Rainfall warning to an Orange Alert Level for CB. Photos taken in Richmond Co. at St. George’s Channel and in St. Peter's. #nsstorm
I am this old now. I went out to dinner in socks and sandals and ordered meatloaf and was excited when they told me I could try their pickle buffet(!?) I like this for me.
😭 They also have an option to pay it forward, where you can pay to donate a meal to another student. This is so good. 🙏
This is nuts. Can we please bring back the editors, proofreaders, and double-checkers? www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

The cyclospora outbreak has reached 17,180 cases across 48 states. The FDA has recalled 1.6 million eggs due to salmonella contamination. Screwworm cases continue to rise. And we’ve just surpassed 2,700 measles cases (including 2 recent deaths) — a 35 year high. “Make America Healthy Again.”
Been saying for years these fucking assholes will come for OUR fresh water reserves. This is a declaration of war and should be recognized as one.
UPDATE: Trump has declared the whole of "Lake America" a US "asset." Moreover, diplomatic channels on trade between the US and Canada are—the White House has now declared—closed. But yes, social media, keep telling us that none of this matters or will have any downstream effects.
This one has updated again with some interesting stuff: Brunswick News was told Thursday about a frantic 48 hours in the aftermath of the initial counter tariff announcement, where industry players in Atlantic Canada pleaded with officials to take seafood off the retaliatory list.
BIG UPDATE: Canada abruptly drops retaliatory tariffs on U.S. seafood Premier Susan Holt’s office had acknowledged the tariffs would hurt New Brunswick, but in order to inflict pain on Trump administration DETAILS: tj.news/new-brunswic... #NB #ME
A few years ago, I stopped for lunch on this little island on the headpond and a little frog joined me. Today, I had lunch and a little fawn popped out of woods. It came back a bit later and swam across the river.
The Government of New Brunswick held a media conference today announcing a review of the province's moratorium on shale gas fracking. I was on the call but they ended it without any questions from the NB Media Co-op, so here's what I was going to ask: 1/

Since we’re considering trade reprisals — I wrote last year about how easy it would be for Canada to make toilet paper completely unavailable to Americans. It could be done without any tariffs or embargoes. It may be happening already. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...
So touching to read how Dolly Parton touched so many lives in such a positive, lasting way. As kids, my cousins and I would dress up as Dolly, stuffed shirts and all, and sing her songs while one of our moms would record us on a camcorder.🧵 1/
my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.
That area has a long history of industry. Hopeful, but growing up there, I can tell you there is IMMENSE nimbyism. The area needs industry jobs. It collapsed in the early augts. Semirelated, the port of Belledune could be a much busier port. Expanded rail, more access. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

New greenwashing rules from Ad Standards Canada mean brands can't exaggerate, use misleading imagery, or make claims without scientific evidence. If enforced, this matters for our health: the fossil fuel industry has spent decades advertising its way out of responsibility for the climate crisis.
Loblaw backtracks on dropping country of origin labelling on produce. Trade wars aside, consumers likely prefer food that is properly inspected. Since that doesn't seem to be happening in US anymore, labelling products at least allows consumers a chance to reduce risk. www.cbc.ca/news/investi...

Loblaw has reversed course on its decision earlier this month to drop country-of-origin labeling on produce signs in its stores in most provinces, following customer backlash.

Oof. What an impactful story. And a reminder that you never know the impact you may have on someone else with a moment of kindness.
This girl I used to waitress with in Austin, we moved to New York together in 2003 on a literal Greyhound bus. Shared a fifth floor walk-up studio that, when it rained, had more leaks in the ceiling than we had pots and pans. We used to get drunk and smoke off the fire escape and do “sad-offs.”
Dolly Parton with Keith Haring in 1985, incredible woman and supporter of LGBTQ people for decades going back to a time when few others dared.
One quote that always makes me laugh: asked what her pet peeve in life was, she said, “Well, nobody realizes I got a great ass.”
This is truly heartbreaking. Dolly Parton was an extraordinary person and an irreplaceable champion of the working class. We are a better country because of her.
