I make my living the old-fashioned way: writing. (he/him)

Golden State Valkyries forward Gabby Williams: “There’s a lot of discourse around trans athletes and what they can compete in. I would welcome a trans athlete on my team or against my team. Anytime. I don’t think it’s a problem in the world, it’s just another way to kind of attack trans people.”

So many parallels: Advances followed by brutal backlashes. Hatred cloaked in concern about "fairness" and "undue influence" on children. Insistence that it's a medical/mental problem. Rage at cultural institutions that "promote a lifestyle." Invective about "special rights." Malevolent statehouses.

I have been thinking a lot lately about how so many of the "arguments" against trans rights are essentially the same as the various fake panics about gay people.

This fits with the stereotype of the lazy Mexican. How can people so lazy be stealing all the jobs? Racism has no logic except to demonize and dehumanize, although racists don't realize that they are the ones becoming less human and more demonic, while the people they hate have always been human.

if you’re an immigrant and unemployed, you’re a freeloader, but if you’re gainfully employed, you’re stealing someone’s job. They just don’t want these people to exist except as targets for their hatred one way or the other bsky.app/profile/heba...

I think the reason I prefer Alien to Aliens is that Aliens is basically Predator in which we meet all these badasses who discover what a badass really looks like and Alien is just people trying to do their jobs and go home, man

A key to staying sane in trying times is to realize that your ability to create change, even in the best of times, is very limited, but your ability to make yourself feel bad about politics, or anything really, is basically unlimited and making yourself feel bad doesn’t make change more likely

it's entirely possible for americans to have a lot of angst about what our government is doing, recognize that they have extremely limited power to change it, and want to feel joy and pride about a soccer team, it's fine, demanding an explanation that reconciles all of this is unreasonable

Competitive high school sports are not about gladiatorial domination; they exist to teach kids teamwork, comradery, promote exercise, and give them a sense of accomplishment. I can think of no better way to accomplish those goals than to compete alongside our trans brothers, sisters, and siblings.
