True enough! I guess the way I see it is I, personally, used to be squarely in the Democratic Party base and have been moved to build a viable left flank alternative for the past 8 years. This has happened v unevenly across place and demographic, but there are 10s of thousands just like me!

This could be true in certain parts of the country, for sure. depending on some definitions — left, regular people, etc — it’s not true everywhere. So, point taken w/caveat that I didn’t insult DSA, god forbid.

She’s right but it’s just because of our lazy media and the attention economy. DSA *is* however the only durable left grassroots organization actually organizing regular people with the intention of permanent, non-election-cycle political infrastructure. And that is unique and it does matter.

I think the invisible thing everyone is arguing around without naming is that our largest chapter is enormously successful electorally, those successes drive national membership, but that chapter ranges from indifferent to hostile towards the national organization and everyone else.

These things don’t happen because capitalism goes too far, but because it *requires* them. A system built to maximize private profit will not be finicky about where that profit comes from or how it is got. This isn’t a unique moment of capitalist degradation; it’s just the one we’re living in.

also this makes american local politics completely illegible because every large city council is either 90% democrat or officially nonpartisan and you just kinda have to know who's part of which informal faction between whom the actual political competition actually happens

It's always a coalition to build a governing majority, that's just politics. What we have is a system that doesn't make the factions legible in a way that has a rational way to sort out, and make clear to everyone, who represents what chunk of the coalition. It all gets flattened into one 'party.'
