news.stanford.edu/stories/2026.... Sadly I report that David Luenberger has died. His optimization research and textbooks had huge influence. Locally, he was a beacon of friendly rigorous optimism in support of interdisciplinary collaboration.
David G. Luenberger, pioneer in optimization theory, dies at 88
Luenberger’s doctoral research gave rise to a technique that aerospace and robotics engineers still use to track the hidden behavior of complex systems.

Dawn for democracy
The Cockroach Janta Party won this battle partly because the legions it led seemed armoured with an alloy of innocence and insouciance. This had something to do with how young they were

The University of Chicago Press held its launch meeting for my book today. Respectability Politics will be out Summer 2027, with a cover featuring original letterpress work by the artist Amos Kennedy, Jr. whose work I greatly admire! So excited to share this book with y’all. I’m really proud of it.

Caroline Hoxby has a fascinating overview in the latest NBER Digest of recent developments in the economics of education. She reviews how data science is changing the field, and how AI and college majors are two rapidly expanding fields of inquity. www.nber.org/reporter/202...
Did you write your comment yet on the OMB rules on federally funded science yet? No? Don’t worry, you can do it this weekend. Here are some resources that can help you get started.
Why is JD Vance trying to make war on American prosperity? Because the Vance-Trump policy agenda he has been one of the principal architects of is, as it was clear from the get-go, a miserable failure in terms of making a middle-class American lifestyle more affordable. It is about distracting... 1/
Terrific essay by Nancy Rose in her testimony here. Analysis of airlines mergers forms the first half. Analysis of recent trend of political connections, not protecting competition, in Federal antitrust enforcement decisions, forms the second half. Strong work.

Go home proud, US Men. Fine through four games (one okay game without the starters starting) and then a ragged game to exit. This is enough to build on for 2030 in greater Iberia. The US President tried to cheat for you, which must hurt. Sorry, we elected him somehow. Always cheats.
Here's a 1 minute BBC recording that found its way into my news feed, of me being queried on the phone in the minutes after the announcement of the 2012 Nobel Prize. It was around 4am in California, and you can tell I was unprepared #econsky #academicsky marketdesigner.blogspot.com/2026/07/the-...

My heart goes out to this young lady. Every Black woman knows what this feels like-to be surrounded by those who wish you harm+ no guarantee of societal defense- your spine stiffens as you become hyperalert- a horrid feeling, esp if you're physically smaller. Honestly, partly why I started muay thai
🧵Happy 250th America! My grandparents came here to escape relentless persecution & grinding poverty in Belarus, Ukraine & Hungary. They found freedom & opportunity & were able to build good lives for themselves, their children & their grandchildren. They loved America - as do I.
No purer evidence that the Laws of the Game are about _incidents_. Folarin Balogun takes two shots, one for a goal, out of wrestling matches, then ejected for an accidentally hard tackle.
Is it pathological to be so moved reading these words?
GOVERNOR LISA COOK GETS TO KEEP HER JOB (FOR NOW) I KNOW THAT'S RIGHT. I NEVER DOUBTED YOU QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good news! Another attempt by the White House to take control of interest rates thwarted. It's deeply disconcerting that Cook was offered none of those common sense mimimums from the start.
Supreme Court rules 5-4 against Trump on Lisa Cook "At minimum, Cook was entitled to some explanation of the evidence at issue, some avenue for a response, and a deadline by which a response would be due." www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...
Fed Gov. Cook statement on defeating Trump firing attempt: "I am grateful for this decision, not for my own sake, but for the sake of the American people, whose economic well-being depends on a central bank that answers to its mission, not political intimidation."
We owe a great debt to Lisa Cook. Sad that the burden fell on such a nice person, glad such a strong person bore the burden so well.
An issue in promoting my forthcoming book. It seems like a good idea to put my (rare) posts on both Bluesky and X, since a lot of economists are still on X. I used to be active on Twitter to promote CSWEP and still have a lot of followers there. But my God—it sort of curdles your soul over there.
I'm so grateful to the colleagues who have been willing to read my forthcoming book How Economics Discovered Women in advance (#1).
